Hi,
I am working on a school paper on the gender gap on Wikipedia. I was
wondering if I could get the statistic on how many of the Norwegian users
are defined as female, like Joseph Reagle got when he posted the question
over a year ago
here<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/gendergap/2011-February/000294.html>
Thanks
Vera
Hi everyone,
I am in the process of developing a wrap-up about WikiWomen's History
Month! If you created, improved on, uploaded, etc. any content in honor
of women's history month it'd be fabulous if you could add your outcomes
to this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiWomen%27s_History_Month/Outcomes
Thanks! Any off-list feedback about events you attended or your feelings
about the event are welcome as well.

Sorry to say...
Right now, on the English Wikipedia main page "did you know" section, is
"World Naked Gardening Day":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Naked_Gardening_Day
You will note on the talkpage of the article there's been a vigorous debate
about the choice of image used
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:World_Naked_Gardening_Day This morning
(my time) the image was not there, with [[user:alan liefting]] working hard
to argue against the photo that has now been placed at the top. I am
dismayed on behalf of women and of gardeners too! I have come across
[[User:Supernova Explosion]] before - he seems to use titillating captions
and images to increase the hits to otherwise legitimate 'did you know'
nominations and is now the user who has been arguing that this photo has
"consensus" to be included while they wait for a better one to be found.
Groan!
I don't want to get involved in an edit-war about this case, but can
anything be done about this case specifically? Is it the right approach to
remove the image and to ask that the discussion about its appropriateness
be delayed until at least after the DYK link is gone??

Two recent Buzzfeed articles:
1. *Wikipedia's Gender Gap, As Measured By Famous Birthdays*, by Anna North
http://www.buzzfeed.com/annanorth/wikipedias-gender-gap-as-measured-by-famo…
A gender gap continues to plague Wikipedia, and one of its main effects is
on the kinds of people the encyclopedia considers noteworthy. We took a
look at this through the lens of birthdays.
2. *The Epic Battle For Wikipedia's Autofellatio Page*, by Jack Stuef
In the underbelly of Wikipedia is an exhibitionist subculture dedicated to
one thing: Ensuring that their penis is the visual definition of
penis. Meet Jiffman, one such exhibitionist. (This article is very probably
NSFW.)

A Part II continuation of the second article should appear on
BuzzFeed later today.
Hi everyone,
HighBeam is offering free accounts for Wikipedians with an account for
one year and 1000 edits. So far only about 300 people have applied and
they have 1,000 slots. HighBeam is a paid newspaper and journal
resource, and as a researcher, even I don't have access to it, so I was
happy to see this opportunity.
And if you don't have the right amount of edits, you can have your
Wikipedian friends find things for you ;-)
See below!

1000 free accounts are available from the internet research database,
HighBeam Research. HighBeam has full versions of tens of millions of
newspaper articles and journals and should be a big help in adding
reliable sources--especially older and paywalled ones--into the
encyclopedia. Sign-ups require a 1-year old account with 1000 edits on
any Wikipedia. Here's the link to the project page:
http://enwp.org/WP:HighBeam (account sign-ups are linked in the box on
the right). Sign-up! And, please tell your Wikipedia-friends about the
opportunity! Cheers, Ocaasi

Hi folks,
During the #geowebchat Twitter meeting I "met" (as close as you can meet
someone on Twitter) a woman who is writing her dissertation about Open
Street Maps and the representation of women's health and childcare and
related subjects in the open source geo spatial community.
I decided to search, on Open Street Maps, for Planned Parenthood (a
(primarily) women's health services non-profit organization located
throughout the United States) and had no results. While there are a few
results for childcare[1].
So, when you search for...strip club you get a nice collection of icons
for strip club (NSFW)[2] used as definers. There are no definers for
women's health or childcare.
While I should not be surprised, I was disappointed to find this out.
Looks like, when my schedule allows it, an OSM street mapping party will
have to take place for women's health, history and related subjects!
