I mean I support the idea of making things work independently.  i.e. CirrusSearch works with or without the ES plugins, taking advantage of them (e.g. implicitly) if present.

Do you mean that we should or shouldn't support it? Or that we should somehow create another plugin on top of cirrus that enhances it with extra features only if those Elasticsearch plugins are installed?
