Thank you Pau, and to all of the folks involved in the process. In addition to the UX designers, design researchers, UX engineers, and brand folks in communications, the Team Practices Group and Community Liaisons were intimately involved. Internal stakeholders and folks from the broader community played instrumental roles as well.

Defining the statement of purpose was a truly collaborative process. It's been awesome to see it all unfold and it's great to see such a clear final product.

Having jointly developed a shared understanding of the purpose of design within the design group and between the design group and their stakeholders may seem simple - and it is, as Pau articulated, by design (pun intended) - but going through a process like this is never easy. In addition to the increased and shared clarity around what design at the WMF is trying to achieve at a big-picture level, this document can and will serve as a useful tool in many different levels of decision making - from day-to-day team-level and product decisions, to big and challenging strategic decisions.

Big thanks again to everyone who has been involved!

Hi all,

Some months ago we started to define a statement of purpose for design at Wikimedia. We shared our initial iteration and got useful feedback. Based on that feedback, we have updated a new version: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Design/Statement_of_purpose

Please, feel free to check the updated version, and provide any suggestion in the talk page.

If the statement just sounds as a logical, simple, and obvious description for the purpose of design here, that was the goal. Putting this in writing has been helpful for designers and people working with us to get into the same page, and will be useful in the future to achieve the level of support for design we envision for those areas where we are not there yet.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to the process.
