Dear Wikimedia Grantee Partners,

I am writing to make sure you are tracking that the Wikimedia Research Fund will be accepting applications until December 15, 2023. As institutional leaders of the Wikimedia movement, affiliates can be well-placed to partner with researchers to explore key questions and issues that help us learn and grow as a movement. If there are questions you (or your partners) are exploring that would benefit from focused research, and if you have local researchers among your current partners, you might want to consider working with them to develop a proposal (or encouraging your partners to). You can develop new research, or leverage existing research to more deeply explore topics relevant to the Wikimedia movement. Funding ranges from USD 2K-50K and we encourage applicants to consider the core needs of their projects and request only the essential funding required.

You can find out more about the Research Fund here:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Research_%26_Technology_Fund/Wikimedia_Research_Fund

The goal of the Research Fund is to diversify the network of Wikimedia researchers globally and support the Wikimedia Movement in deeper understanding of the projects, decision making, and building new technologies. While all research proposals related to Wikimedia projects are welcome, we particularly encourage research studies on medium to small size languages and communities, as well as in low resourced languages and projects. You can even propose to repeat a past study in a given language in another language.

Detailed submission instructions will be shared by November 15, 2023 on the Meta page linked above. For a sample of last year's stage I submissions, please check the archive.

You can also review previously funded proposals here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Research_Fund/Proposals/Funded

If you have questions, please reach out to research_fund@wikimedia.org (copied on this email) or schedule 1:1 consultations with us. Click here to schedule a session with Kinneret Gordon or here to schedule a session with Leila Zia. When scheduling your appointment, please provide a description of your proposed research topic or question.

Best,

Veronica
