BoF was interesting with several inputs ... including his prolific ones. As one of its result, we have held a general discussion place for wiki and translation, which we'd introduce on this email. The community newly launched will focus on how and what is doing translation on wiki: it is not same to do on your laptop alone ... it has many unexplored potential, technically, sociologically or even economically. Are models works or arts ?

Hello, a while ago, I was in Paris to photograph the Naval Museum. They have models of ships which can be either * ancient arsenal models (at the time a scale model was considered to be part of the documentation of a ship, along with the plans), but also * modern models of modern ships, and even, more treacherously, * modern models of ancient ships I'd like to have an educated opinion on what constitutes a work of art in this domain. We have quite a few photographs of recent scale models like http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Croiseur-Colbert-p1000458.jpg or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:LNG_tanker_model.jpg Some of the recent models are credited to their authors as if they were sculptures, so there might be a strong case to consider them as original, copyrighted works of art whose photographs cannot be photographed freely. I have quite a few such images in my pipeline, I'd be glad to know what to do with them. -- Rama

Hi! I noticed today Commons image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Mus_Musculus-huismuis.jpg as illustration for article http://www.lenta.ru/news/2007/11/02/mouse/ about newly created GMO super-mouse. Other example is Minsk photo http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Victory-square.jpg in http://lenta.ru/news/2007/07/31/venez/. In both cases attributions are far from ideal. Should we take any actions (I mean educational one)? With best regards, Eugene. PS lenta.ru on my opinion is one of the best Russian news sites.

You can't upload images directly to the Spanish Wikipedia - it leads to Commons

After warning some users from the Spanish Wikipedia not to upload FAIR USE images to the commons (and blocked one of them...) I've checked the Wikipedia, and I've noticed that the UPLOAD FILE section in http://es.wikipedia.org/ leads DIRECTLY to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload?uselang=es Uploading fair use images seems to be valid in any other Wikipedia, and the result is that the Es.Wikipedia users uploads the images directly to commons. This situation CAN'T go on. Yuval

New photography rules in U.S. National Parks and other federal lands

The U.S. Department of the Interior is considering changing rules regarding photography on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Services, and the National Park Service. That would include all national parks, and other places (e.g. the National Mall in DC). New Filming Rules Proposed on Federal Lands http://dcist.com/2007/10/31/filming_rules_o.php#more Tourists would still be allowed to take pictures, but the definition of commercial photography is vague in what they propose. I think I would still take pictures and upload them to Commons. But, technically I suppose we are commercial or freelance photographers, since we allow such use. I would not like it if the new rules allow security personnel to be more bothersome when I'm taking photographs. -Aude

Huzzah! A worthy goal; thanks, philg. I am thinking of the many fantastic illustrators who pepper the projects, waiting for people to ask them for suitably interesting or difficult illustrative tasks -- one of the most delightful classes of wiki editors I have ever run across. We'll see how funded content creation goes; but whether or not the funds end up being the key to encouraging new work, these illustrators certainly deserve this sort of attention for their fine work. The Wikimedia Foundation has received a donation from Philip Greenspun for the purpose of creating and improving illustrations on Wikimedia. The Board has decided to accept his donation of $US20,000 for this special purpose. This is the first time the Foundation has been directly involved in funded content creation, although the German chapter's experience in winning a government grant to write articles on sustainable development has helped pave the way. The Foundation wants a "hands-off" minimal administration role with the bulk of the work of organizing the project and creating the content to be completed by members of our community. Since this is the first time we've done this, we're not sure how it will go. This is a bit experimental and we ask for your patience and enthusiasm to help make it a success. Brianna Laugher (<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Pfctdayelise>) will be coordinating the project, with my help as the Foundation's Volunteer Coordinator. How will it run? Since Philip's kind donation is a lot of money and we're planning to pay around US$40 per illustration (with some lower and higher amounts, see details to follow), we want to progress the project in stages. Starting out with a small number of 50 requested illustrations, we'll look at our results and modify and improve it for successive stages. The project will flow along as follows: * Create list of requested illustrations. * Open illustration requests on issue tracking software * Users will self-assign requests, signaling his or her intent to create that illustration. * On creation and approval, the user is paid the amount as set in the original request. Credits in books

An author has contacted me to use some of my photographs in a book (a big, serious, scholarly, several-volume thing). He contacted me, and several other users, after seeing images on Commons. Consequences: 1) Commons does get some visibility, and provides images to serious work. Cheer up, people ! 2) The author is enquiring how I wish to be credited. What do you people think would be a concise yet effective way to mention Wikimedia Commons in such cases ? Cheers ! -- Rama
