Subject: [OSM-talk] Mapilio Mobile capture app now open source
To: <talk(a)openstreetmap.org>
Hi all,
Mapilio's iOS/Android street-level imagery capture app is now open source:
http://github.com/mapilio/mobile-apps
Every image captured through it is licensed CC BY-SA and cleared for OSM
use, and the team is opening it up so anyone can verify that in code, not
just in a privacy policy - and to invite the community to help build it:
bug reports, accessibility fixes, capture-flow improvements, new features.
As of 18 September 2026 the platform has over 20 million image records,
1,700 registered accounts and 280+ contributing accounts. The team's also
planning better panorama support, drone imagery, a marketplace, F-Droid
distribution, refreshed interfaces, and an updated contribution scoring
system - plenty of room for community input on where it goes next.
I've posted a longer write-up on the forum:

Contribution guide:

Thanks, that is the useful pushback and we agree on the principle: different is not wrong.
I went back through the set with your point in hand and it split the eight, so first the correction to my own numbers.
Requiring a real DateTimeOriginal (no digitized fallback), the count is 414 files carrying both dates, 7 disagree. The file that drops out is the one I led with: "Lago Viedma y Cordon Chalten", the eight-year gap. It has no DateTimeOriginal at all. Its only in-file date is DateTimeDigitized, and the camera model field reads QSS-32_33, which looks like a Noritsu minilab scanner. That is a scan date, not a capture date, exactly the case you describe. It is the weakest item in the set and it should not have carried the headline.
Of the remaining seven, one pair is the page saying 2015-11-20 23:45 against a file saying 2015-11-21 00:52. Sixty-seven minutes across midnight: the same instant in two zones, not a disagreement.
So the bar I now hold myself to: a difference is not evidence of anything unless the file agrees with itself. In the one case I did act on, EXIF and GPS both said 2016-02-18 while the page said 2016-06-20. Two independent in-file signals against one page field. Everything else stays a flag, and the flag says nothing about which side is right.
Your description dates being checked at upload is the strongest part of your method, and it is why the caveat sits in the post. If you ever want the check run over one of your own categories, I will hand you the list and touch nothing.

Hi everyone,
This is your reminder that next Tuesday, 22 September, is the next Global
GLAM Call. These are monthly community calls with a collaborative agenda
that usually covers all kinds of culture and heritage related topics in the
WIkimedia movement. Every month, for more than 2 years, dozens of community
members have gathered online to exchange ideas and projects and discuss
different ongoing activities.
This month there is a very interesting agenda that will include a few
project updates as well as a cultural commons dialogue with partners such
as the Open Knowledge and Open Future!
Hope you will be able to join! Register here:
