Subject: [Wikidata] New step towards structured data for Commons is now
available: federation
To: "Discussion list for the Wikidata project." <
wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
As you may know, WMF, WMDE and volunteers are working together on the
structured
data for Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Structured_data> project. We’re
currently working on a lot of technical groundwork for this project. One
big part of that is allowing the use of Wikidata’s items and properties to
describe media files on Commons. We call this feature federation. We have
now developed the necessary code for it and you can try it out on a test
system and give feedback.
We have one test wiki that represents Commons (http://structured-commons.
wmflabs.org) and another one simulating Wikidata (http://federated-wikidata.
wmflabs.org). You can see an example
<http://structured-commons.wmflabs.org/wiki/MediaInfo:M13> where the
statements use items and properties from the faked Wikidata. Feel free to
try it by adding statements to to some of the files on the test system.
(You might need to create some items on http://federated-wikidata.
wmflabs.org if they don’t exist yet. We have created a few for testing.)
If you have any questions or concern, please let us know.
Thanks,
--

Hi!
I learned about nice tradition in Polish Wikipedia: users gallery
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedyst%C3%B3w_portret_w%C5%82as…),
which may contain humorous connotations.
I think such descriptions are great way to keep history of project as
well as a chance for newbies to learn about old timers.
Unfortunately Commons was created long time ago and many prominent
contributors are covered by fog of time.
Eugene.
Hey everyone,
apologies for the cross-posting, we're just too excited:
we're looking for a new member for our team [0], who'll dive right away in
the promising Structured Data project. [1]
Is our future colleague hiding among the tech ambassadors, translators,
GLAM people, community members we usually work with? We look forward to
finding out soon.
So please, check the full job description [2], apply, or tell/recommend
anyone who you think may be a good fit. For any questions, please contact
me personally (not here).
Thanks!

Hi all,
Today at 1 July the photo contest Wiki Loves Public Space started in
Belgium. This year is the first year in what we have during the full
Summer freedom
of panorama <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_panorama> in Belgium (
info <https://be.wikimedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_panorama>), which means that
modern buildings and artworks in the public space can be photographed and
freely be published. For years it was not possible to illustrate articles
with photos of modern buildings and artworks in the public space due the
limitations of the Belgian copyright law. To celebrate this freedom and to
compensate the many years of not being allowed to upload photos of these
Belgian subjects (and thus bare articles), we organise this photo contest.
During the Summer months July and August 2017 you can participate by
uploading your photos from modern buildings, public artworks, heritage
monuments and memorials, present in the public space in Belgium. Also
photos you made earlier are welcome!
See for more information about how to participate at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Public_Space_2017_in_…
This photo contest is supported by Wikimedia Belgium
<https://be.wikimedia.org>.
