I like this better! I would probably just make it two
imperative
sentences:
"Begin with the good faith assumption that everyone is doing necessary
work. If you have concerns about a proposal then help craft an
alternative approach."

necessary work, the intention behind this idiom is to reinforce that
to oppose an idea or approach is to engage in the crafting of
alternatives.
