I've done metrics with Commons categories a lot. If you need to do metrics on a very specific chosen set, it's important to create a category (usually a hidden category) that is very dedicated to that specific purpose and that community will actually not add to - otherwise it'll skew and falsify your metrics. For instance "Commons upload of Belgian World Museum, November 2024" - and make that a hidden category just for metrics. It's very helpful if it's just one and not multiple per upload/project, as that just simplifies retrieving the metrics.

On top of that, content-based categories are of course very valuable. If it's useful for this community to have categories related to countries and continents, then it's great to create those. Do keep in mind that maintaining Commons categories requires some effort, actively curating, and every now and then cleaning/recategorizing.

In the bigger picture, I'm one of the people who at some point would like Commons categories to be fully replaced by search and discovery based on structured data. So to me, adding high-quality structured data to files and publications would be the highest priority. It would be great to strive for queries and galleries, as early as possible, saying "give me all the BHL Commons images of mammals from publications related to Brazil" rather than using categories for this. I would like to use the expertise of this group of people to help get us to higher-quality data and better modeling so that this becomes possible.

My reason is that we need depicts statements to achieve the aims of both the WMF Annual Plan as well as the aligned aims of the BHL-Wiki working group. We need to know what the image depicts in order to make the image more findable and reusable in multiple Wikis including various language Wikipedias as well as in Wikidata. Other minimum information would likely include the “required” statements set out in this document https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10rnmAWlreprUTEuJJ0p3uZBJZ6YhO7a3o7K0... However, again I’m wanting the community to give their thoughts on this.

I want to leave this discussion to be more with the group for a bit, but just want to highlight a few things:

- Yes, the idea is to use hidden categories, as this is the main way the communities have been using to group files for their GLAM-Wiki projects. See other hidden categories https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Hidden_categories here. - An important discussion here is to decide whether we should have one single hidden category for the entire thing or divide by region. For example, one hidden category for South America and another hidden category for Africa, both inside another category that could be something along those lines: Category:Files from the Biodiversity Heritage Library by region or Category:Biodiversity Heritage Library SDC project. - However, looking at the category tree, I know that we usually don't use regions, but rather countries (e.g., Category:Invasive species by country https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Invasive_species_by_country). In this case, we can still use the regional language in the hypothesis, but divide the actual work (and categories) into South American and African countries. Would this be possible considering the tags on Flickr, @Dearborn, JJ DearbornJJ@si.edu? Or is this too much? To have country clarity would, at the end of the line, also help us in terms of searchability/findability for image suggestions on Wikipedia.

Regarding the discussion around SDC and categories, I agree with Sandra that this would be the perfect world. However, as we are not there yet and both SDC and categories are important for searchability, the way we can measure the impact of this work before and after is by using categories. This way, we will add these categories to Commons Impact Metrics https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/07/19/commons-impact-metrics-now-available-via-data-dumps-and-api/ and track their usage and views.

About depicts statements, I think we need to understand how to model them, but it will be an important metadata to have as it's one of the main ones used to make images searchable/findable for users (both on MediaSearch and for image suggestions on Wikipedia), which is part of the goal for the Q3 hypothesis. Specific categories are also very useful for this currently, so we might want to consider adding more specific categories too -- even though, yes, SDC only would be ideal.

I hope this makes sense but I'm happy to discuss further -- a lot of food for thought here! 🎉

I’m very happy to support any solution that gives Gio the tracking metrics she needs in order to report back to the WMF. As regards your question JJ about bulk uploading of images relating to South American and African geographies in Flickr but not yet in Wikimedia Commons and adding a hidden metric tracking category at the same time as the upload, I’m assuming this is possible. I have certainly done something similar (although this was a long time ago now) via the Pattypan tool. I’m assuming it should be easy with OpenRefine but I hope Sandra will be able to confirm this also.

I checked with some WMF folks who work with Media Search and Image Suggestions and they recommended us not to use hidden categories, as they are not used to suggest images and that might be a problem if we want to schedule/organize the events at the start of 2025. Therefore, would it be possible and ok with you all if we simply use a BHL subcategory? I can still track its metrics, add to Commons Impact Metrics, etc.

About depicts statements, I think we need to understand how to model them, but it will be an important metadata to have as it's one of the main ones used to make images searchable/findable for users (both on MediaSearch and for image suggestions on Wikipedia), which is part of the goal for the Q3 hypothesis. Specific categories are also very useful for this currently, so we might want to consider adding more specific categories too -- even though, yes, SDC only would be ideal.

I’m very happy to support any solution that gives Gio the tracking metrics she needs in order to report back to the WMF. If this isn’t possible then a hidden category seems to me to be an appropriate stop gap solution. However as Sandra points out editing work is likely to have to be undertaken to maintain this category.

As regards your question JJ about bulk uploading of images relating to South American and African geographies in Flickr but not yet in Wikimedia Commons and adding a hidden metric tracking category at the same time as the upload, I’m assuming this is possible. I have certainly done something similar (although this was a long time ago now) via the Pattypan tool. I’m assuming it should be easy with OpenRefine but I hope Sandra will be able to confirm this also.

I've done metrics with Commons categories a lot. If you need to do metrics on a very specific chosen set, it's important to create a category (usually a hidden category) that is very dedicated to that specific purpose and that community will actually not add to - otherwise it'll skew and falsify your metrics. For instance "Commons upload of Belgian World Museum, November 2024" - and make that a hidden category just for metrics. It's very helpful if it's just one and not multiple per upload/project, as that just simplifies retrieving the metrics.

On top of that, content-based categories are of course very valuable. If it's useful for this community to have categories related to countries and continents, then it's great to create those. Do keep in mind that maintaining Commons categories requires some effort, actively curating, and every now and then cleaning/recategorizing.

In the bigger picture, I'm one of the people who at some point would like Commons categories to be fully replaced by search and discovery based on structured data. So to me, adding high-quality structured data to files and publications would be the highest priority. It would be great to strive for queries and galleries, as early as possible, saying "give me all the BHL Commons images of mammals from publications related to Brazil" rather than using categories for this. I would like to use the expertise of this group of people to help get us to higher-quality data and better modeling so that this becomes possible.

I envision images being placed in these categories when they have achieved the minimum level of Structured Data on Commons (SDC) statements attached to the image file. I think the minimum SDC data for images in these categories would have to include “depicts” statements. My reason is that we need depicts statements to achieve the aims of both the WMF Annual Plan as well as the aligned aims of the BHL-Wiki working group. We need to know what the image depicts in order to make the image more findable and reusable in multiple Wikis including various language Wikipedias as well as in Wikidata. Other minimum information would likely include the “required” statements set out in this document https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10rnmAWlreprUTEuJJ0p3uZBJZ6YhO7a3o7K0... However, again I’m wanting the community to give their thoughts on this.
