I like the idea of a hidden property that we can use to control the metrics. That makes a lot of sense to me.
Also, agree that SDC should eventually supplant categories. If the desired result is for users to search and find relevant content: I loved this write-up from https://diff.wikimedia.org/2018/10/29/george-oates-conversation/ @George Oatesmailto:glo@flickr.org on the topic.https://diff.wikimedia.org/2018/10/29/george-oates-conversation/
Find* is the keyword here. 😆
I have one additional question that I forgot to ask yesterday regarding our WMF hypothesis tracking:
Q: Once I do the data analysis on the images from the Flickr corpushttps://smithsonian.figshare.com/articles/dataset/BHL_Image_Data/24476686?file=43011922 to identify images related to the South American and African geographies, will it be easy to do a bulk update in Commons and apply a hidden metric tracking category to those images?
thanks, JJ

If I understand correctly, such a category / categories should serve to track uptake on a very specific set of selected files, right?
I've done metrics with Commons categories a lot. If you need to do metrics on a very specific chosen set, it's important to create a category (usually a hidden category) that is very dedicated to that specific purpose and that community will actually not add to - otherwise it'll skew and falsify your metrics. For instance "Commons upload of Belgian World Museum, November 2024" - and make that a hidden category just for metrics. It's very helpful if it's just one and not multiple per upload/project, as that just simplifies retrieving the metrics.
On top of that, content-based categories are of course very valuable. If it's useful for this community to have categories related to countries and continents, then it's great to create those. Do keep in mind that maintaining Commons categories requires some effort, actively curating, and every now and then cleaning/recategorizing.
In the bigger picture, I'm one of the people who at some point would like Commons categories to be fully replaced by search and discovery based on structured data. So to me, adding high-quality structured data to files and publications would be the highest priority. It would be great to strive for queries and galleries, as early as possible, saying "give me all the BHL Commons images of mammals from publications related to Brazil" rather than using categories for this. I would like to use the expertise of this group of people to help get us to higher-quality data and better modeling so that this becomes possible.
Curious what others think! Sandra

Further to our meeting held earlier today, the attendees discussed the WMF Annual Plan - see the meeting agendahttps://docs.google.com/document/d/19_-TZa3HBWYr_J-E1nsuGlCl6peHI47bXKqt-K5du2M/edit?usp=sharing.
One of the action points towards this effort was for me to suggest a Wikimedia Commons category or categories to facilitate the tracking of our efforts towards achieving goals set out the WMF Annual Plan.
I have come up with the following suggestions but I would like others in the group to weigh in on whether these are fit for purpose.
Firstly, I’m of the opinion that any category created for this effort should be a subcategory under the Category:Files from the Biodiversity Heritage Libraryhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Files_from_the_Biodiversity_Heritage_Library. However I can be persuaded otherwise if others have a differing opinion.
Secondly, I’m leaning towards creating categories that can continue to be used by our community. I believe the proposed categories should be more general so they can be useful for the wiki community going forward.
In light of the above I have come up with the following suggestions:
Category:Biodiversity Heritage Library SDC South America collection and Category:Biodiversity Heritage Library SDC Africa collection
I envision images being placed in these categories when they have achieved the minimum level of Structured Data on Commons (SDC) statements attached to the image file. I think the minimum SDC data for images in these categories would have to include “depicts” statements. My reason is that we need depicts statements to achieve the aims of both the WMF Annual Plan as well as the aligned aims of the BHL-Wiki working group. We need to know what the image depicts in order to make the image more findable and reusable in multiple Wikis including various language Wikipedias as well as in Wikidata. Other minimum information would likely include the “required” statements set out in this document https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10rnmAWlreprUTEuJJ0p3uZBJZ6YhO7a3o7K0... However, again I’m wanting the community to give their thoughts on this.
So, what do folk think? Feel free to reach out to me and we will also be discussing this at our next BHL-Wiki meeting on the 21st of October.
All the best,
