Wikipedia Education Program Update

Welcome to the Wikipedia Education Update — a newsletter from the Wikimedia Foundation that is distributed the first and third Tuesday of each month. Someone from our staff has talked with you about our Wikipedia Education Program to bring Wikipedia into higher education classrooms around the world, and we wanted to keep you in the loop on all of our exciting activities. If you would prefer not to receive these messages, simply reply to the email and ask for your address to be removed. Learn more about subscribing or read the archives.

What resources do you use most in the classroom?
Professors and Ambassadors are encouraged to chime in to a discussion on wiki about which of the non-human resources provided are most useful for students. Do your students like specific handouts? Do they watch any screencast videos? What handout do you wish we had? What could you not live without? Please share any thoughts.

Blog post highlights U.S. student's contributions
Dana WesterkamDavidson College student Dana Westerkam took two terms' worth of psychology classes from Dr. Greta Munger, and in both classes, Dana wrote Wikipedia articles for class. In a new Wikimedia Foundation blog post, Dana explains her experiences writing the articles on confabulation and insight, and says why she prefers Wikipedia assignments to traditional assignments. Read about Dana's experiences.

Media coverage of program grows in Arabic, English
Articles published in U.S. and Egyptian press last month discussed the Wikipedia Education Program. An article in Youm7, a Cairo news site, describes the work students at Ain Shams University have been doing to increase the quality and quantity of content on the Arabic Wikipedia. Several news sites in Utah also covered the work being done by Dr. Gunseli Berik at the University of Utah to incorporate Wikipedia as a teaching tool into her classroom. See the list of articles.

Welcome, Sage Ross!
Sage RossSage Ross re-joined the Wikimedia Foundation staff last month in a role assisting with communications about the Wikipedia Education Program. In his new role, Sage is responsible for answering questions about the program on-wiki, communicating successes and learning points, and developing and updating a series of help resources for students and professors. Sage edits outside of work as User:Ragesoss, and he was a team member instrumental in setting up the Wikipedia Ambassador Program on the English Wikipedia. Leave Sage a note welcoming him on his talk page.
