AfroCROWD is headed to Detroit for the Allied Media Conference, an exciting gathering of
changemakers from all over the country happening June 15-18th at Wayne State university,
Detroit, Michigan. Join us in person or  onlinefor a Wikipedia learn-to-edit-a-thon and
oral history capture focused on curating the history of civil rights and social justice
movements in Detroit through firsthand and researched accounts.
Afro Free-Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD) and the Radical, Libraries, Archives
and Museums track (RadLAM) invite participants to share testimonies at an oral history
listening Station, or get trained on how to add and edit articles on Wikipedia. Wikipedia
coaches and members of RadLAM will be on-hand to help.

Flash opportunity to connect with the Hip Hop Hacks community starting this weekend!
Hip Hop Hacks Monthly Music Hackathon
Saturday June 10, 2017, 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm (wiki workshop 2-4 pm)
at Spotify, 45 W 18th St, 3rd Floor
Join us on Saturday, June 10th for  Hip Hop Hacks at the Monthly Music
Hackathonincluding Wikipedia participation in a general hacking event. The theme this time
is  hip hop.
Note that this is a general hackathon and not exclusively a Wikipedia event. There will be
a Wikipedia workshop there from 2-4 pm for anyone who wants to learn to edit.
Some people at this event are producing audio and wish to share it. Wikipedia editors are
invited to help them upload this audio and integrate it into relevant Wikipedia articles.
The hackathon is being introduced to us in association with the Wikipedia presentation
happening at the  International Conference of Auditory Displayin Pennsylvania.

The Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon NYCwill be held Thursday June 22, 2017at the  Museum
of Modern Art.
Themes for this event include art related to HIV/AIDS activism and on LGBTQ artists of the
African Diaspora as part of the  Black Lunch Tableproject.
This is the third annual Wiki Loves Pride editathon at MoMA - see  2015 editionand
 2016 edition.

Wikimania 2017, the 13th annual international conference of the Wikimedia movement, is
being held August 9-13, 2017 in Montréal, Canada. This is an action packed, fun, global
conference of all things Wikipedia that is open to the public. Each year the conference is
held in a new country. This year, we are happy to have it in our back yard.
Whether you actively edit Wikipedia, mostly enjoy reading the content, have thought of
doing more with Wikipedia, or are just curious about the free knowledge movement,

WikiConference North America 2017
We are pleased to announce that  WikiConference North America 2017will be held in
Montrealon Wednesdayand Thursday, August 9-10thas a pre-conference to
Wikimania(Friday-Sunday August 11-13th).August 9-10 in Montreal, Canada
Wednesday, August 9th:Culture Crawl at various cultural institutions in Montreal. Focus:
galleries, libraries, archives, museums, and monuments.
Thursday, August 10th:This day will be full of programming, with a keynote, tracks, and
lightning talks followed by the official Wikimania kick-off receptionthat evening at the
conference venue, Le Centre Sheraton Montreal.

Don't miss the Wiki-Train!
On August 8, Wikimedia New York Cityis planning a  Adirondack Wiki-Train Ride, a
special pre-conference train ride from New York City to Montreal. This is a day-long train
trip mostly through the beautiful Upstate New York countryside (8:15 am - 7:11pm). If you
are interested in attending,  check out the event page and sign up!
We are also working on getting low cost  accomodationfor the conference. Right now
they are as low as $40/night. Stay tuned.

Brooklyn Library Skillshare
In May, AfroCROWD was pleased to participate in the fourth annual Skillshare at the Info
Commons of the Brooklyn Library. We joined technologists, designers, and other free
culture supporters for a day of learning through workshops, demonstrations and
presentations by people from throughout the New York City area.
Congratulationsto the Brooklyn Library organizers for another successful event.

Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD)is an initiative which seeks to
increase the number of people of African Descents who actively partake in the Wikimedia
and free knowledge, culture and software movements. Since its launch during Black Wiki
History Month in 2015, AfroCROWD has sensitized thousands in its target audience about
free culture crowdsourcing and the need to close the multicultural and gender gaps in
Wikipedia. AfroCROWD has also held monthly multilingual edit-a-thons in partnership with
renowned cultural institutions, museums, galleries, educators, libraries, and archives in
