Hi Douglas,

I am glad to hear there is a group working on the ground and I will be attending the conference.

I will be presenting on "Cross collaboration across open movements in Africa" using Wikipedia and Open Street Maps as a case study, talking especially on how both communities can benefit and make each others work relevant.

I will showcase how Wikipedia makes use of geodata (coordinates) in articles of places and suggest new ways we can work together.

Cheers,

Hello Douglas

Thanks for letting us all know. This sounds very exciting!!

Responding to what Asaf said … perhaps an explanation is required of what he meant. In the Wikimedia world you have to be endorsed by the AffCom committee (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliations_Committeeto call yourself a Usergroup - the Cameroon group has just completed the process.

When you are a group of enthusiastic volunteers working towards this recognition, groups like yours call themselves Planning Wikimedia Uganda Usergroup, or similar. This is the norm. So I guess that is why he is surprised at the words you used.

Asaf, you can see the work that the Uganda Volunteer group has done on Wiki Loves Africa over the last 3 years if you look here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa -
The team that typically takes part can be seen here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016/Local_events#Uganda

Douglas can point you to the other outreach work they have done.

Dear Wikimedians,

Especially from Africa, apologies that this has come in, really really late, nevertheless, thought the list can know about the above OpenStreetMap Conference happening in the next few hours in Kampala. Details at

It's a pity that we do not have a session about Wikipedia/Wikimedia Projects, however, Wikimedia Usergroup members in Uganda and other African countries are strongly involved in the organisation of the above conference, and this is just a start, we highly hope to have more involvement of Wikimedia in the future events.

Thanks.
