Dear Wikimedians,

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Africa Wiki Women invites you to Celebrate African Women in Wikimedia – a special online event and edit-a-thon dedicated to highlighting and celebrate the contributions of African women in the Wikimedia movement. As part of the virtual meetup, we will come together to share inspiring stories, exchange experiences and personal recitations, etc., and collaborate on a 3-week-long effort to update citizenship data on women's biographies.

Why Does the Wikidata Update Matter?

Updating citizenship statements on Wikidata is crucial because it directly impacts the accuracy and representation of women’s biographies across Wikimedia projects. Platforms like Hmaniki, which analyze gender gaps in Wikipedia biographies, rely on structured data from Wikidata to assess diversity and inclusion. Without accurate citizenship data, many women’s biographies may be underrepresented or misclassified, leading to skewed statistics on gender and regional representation.
