Special invitation to Wikipedia Beta Translation Hackathon - Translate-a-thon, from Professor Ximena Guallardo, Wikimedia NYC

Hello everyone--

Boldly assuming you are fluent in at least one other language besides English, I would like to extend a personal invitation to you all to attend our "beta" Wikipedia translatathon on Wednesday, October 11, starting at 2PM and going on until 4PM in E-106 at CUNY LaGuardia CC, 31-10 Thomson Ave, Long Island City,

As you may know, there are 299 language editions of Wikipedia, but the number of articles for each varies enormously, from more than 5 million in English to just 6 in Choctaw ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias). Each time we translate one article from one language encyclopedia to another, we help readers retrieve information about other cultures and peoples; we also help them gain information that, for whatever reason, was not readily available in their own language(s).

In this particular event, professors will translate articles from one Wikipedia language site to another with the help of Wikipedia's very own translating programs. You will work on articles of your choosing, but we will be translating and learning the process together. You don’t need to have any experience with Wikipedia to participate – we will provide a training at the beginning of the event with everything you need to get started.
I hope you can find some time to join us.
Best,

Ximena Gallardo C.
Professor of English
CUNY-LaGuardia CC
