You are invited to this month's AfroCROWD Wikipedia Seminar at the Brooklyn Library Skillshare. We will join this festive, all day event that will attract makers and innovators in the New York City area for a day of learning. The event runs from 10am-6pm. Join us in the Balcony Conference Room to learn about the world of Wikimedia and how to edit Wikipedia. You can also join us to improve your Wikipedia editing skills and meet other Wikipedians.
As always, each of our events are free. All levels of Wikipedia exposure and languages are welcome. Wikipedia coaches will be on hand to help.
*While a limited amount of laptops are available, please bring a laptop if you can and
register for a Wikipedia account ahead of the event.

Telling Untold Histories unconference at
Rutgers University - Newark from 2:10pm - 3:25pm on Thursday, May 11, 2017. Join BLT for a workshop of social Wikipedia editing! A training session will be held, but help is available throughout the event. Register for the conference, BRING YOUR LAPTOP and feel free to bring a friend!

Join us! August 9-13, 2017 in Montréal, Canada.
Wikimania 2017, the 13th annual international conference of the Wikimedia movement, is being held August 9-13, 2017 in Montréal, Canada. This is an action packed, fun, global conference of all things Wikipedia that is open to the public. Each year the conference is held in a new country. This year, we are happy to have it in our back yard.
Whether you actively edit Wikipedia, mostly enjoy reading the content, have thought of doing more with Wikipedia, or are just curious about the free knowledge movement, Wikimania is for you. Learn more about

WikiConference North America 2017
We are pleased to announce that
WikiConference North America 2017 will be held in Montreal on Wednesday and Thursday, August 9-10th as a pre-conference to Wikimania ( Friday- Sunday August 11-13th).August 9-10 in Montreal, Canada
- Wednesday, August 9th: Culture Crawl at various cultural institutions in Montreal. Focus: galleries, libraries, archives, museums, and monuments.
- Thursday, August 10th: This day will be full of programming, with a keynote, tracks, and lightning talks followed by the official Wikimania kick-off reception that evening at the conference venue, Le Centre Sheraton Montreal.

Don't miss the Wiki-Train!
On August 8, Wikimedia New York City is planning a
Adirondack Wiki-Train Ride, a special pre-conference train ride from New York City to Montreal. This is a day-long train trip mostly through the beautiful Upstate New York countryside (8:15 am - 7:11pm). If you are interested in attending,
check out the event page and sign up!
We are also working on getting low cost
accomodation for the conference. Right now they are as low as $40/night. Stay tuned. |

Wikimedia Conference, Berlin
Congrats to our Alice Backer, who attended the annual Wikimedia Conference in Berlin, Germany last month as a delegate representative of Wikimedia New York CIty where she is a vice president. The event is a coming together of Wikimedia community leaders from around the world to, among other topics, strategize the future of Wikipedia. Wikipedia Med is everywhere!
AfroCROWD was pleased to join the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Columbia University's School of International Public Administration (SIPA) for two events focused on Wikipedia in the medical community. At Icahn Mount Sinai we delved into the contributions of women and people of African descent in medical history and at Columbia, we witnessed the launch of a device that will bring offline medical information to doctors and medical professionals working in rural areas around the developing world using Kiwix, Wikimedia technology. Exciting suff that may save lives. |

Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD) is an initiative which seeks to increase the number of people of African Descents who actively partake in the Wikimedia and free knowledge, culture and software movements. Since its launch during Black Wiki History Month in 2015, AfroCROWD has sensitized thousands in its target audience about free culture crowdsourcing and the need to close the multicultural and gender gaps in Wikipedia. AfroCROWD has also held monthly multilingual edit-a-thons in partnership with renowned cultural institutions, museums, galleries, educators, libraries, and archives in the New York Metro area and beyond. AfroCROWD has also trained future trainers in the target community. |
