Yes, contesting deletions DOES change decisions, sometimes.
Echoing Iolanda, this isn't a football match where we pick sides, and it's not appropriate to _automatically_ object to any deletion of Africa-related content. But if admins are sometimes too quick to delete, it is at least sometimes because they are not informed enough, or lack cultural context, and that's where you can help, i.e. by providing it, not by just objecting.

I think people in this mailing list might enrich significantly the discussions related to delation.
it is healthy to delate articles which present topics and people that are indeed not notable. but as we know, sometimes you need to have some background knowledge to actually know what is notable and what is not. your contribution in this would be great.
