Dear Wikimedians,
In celebration of International Women’s Day, Africa Wiki Women
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Africa_Wiki_Women> invites you to Celebrate
African Women in Wikimedia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Celebrating_Africa_Women_in_Wikimedia>
– a special online event and edit-a-thon dedicated to highlighting and
celebrate the contributions of African women in the Wikimedia movement. As
part of the virtual meetup, we will come together to share inspiring
stories, exchange experiences and personal recitations, etc., and
collaborate on a 3-week-long effort to update citizenship data on women's
biographies.
Why Does the Wikidata Update Matter?
Updating citizenship statements on Wikidata is crucial because it directly
impacts the accuracy and representation of women’s biographies across
Wikimedia projects. Platforms like Hmaniki, which analyze gender gaps in
Wikipedia biographies, rely on structured data from Wikidata to assess
diversity and inclusion. Without accurate citizenship data, many women’s
biographies may be underrepresented or misclassified, leading to skewed
statistics on gender and regional representation.
Who can participate?
All are invited to join
How can you participate?
We have generated Wikidata queries
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Celebrating_Africa_Women_in_Wikimedia>
to get you started; just add your name and update citizenship data from the*
8th March to the 31st March, 2025*.
📆 Date: Thursday, 13th March 2025

Why join the online meetup?
- Hear inspiring stories – Women in Wikimedia share their experiences,
challenges, wins, and work in a 3-minute pitch.
- Engage in a trivia challenge—test your knowledge of notable women in
history and Wikimedia.
- Participate in the edit-a-thon – Help improve the accuracy of women’s
biographies by updating citizenship data on Wikidata (March 8th–31st, 2025).
Want to Share Your Story?
We’re inviting African women in Wikimedia to take the spotlight with a
3-minute pitch! Share your journey, experiences, a fun Wiki moment, or
highlight the amazing work you’re doing. You can also perform a poem or
song celebrating African women. This is a great opportunity to connect,
collaborate, and showcase your impact within the movement.
