attached the L2K.[1]
This letter consists of the feedback collected from participants on two
sets of questions (explained further in the letter). The organizers of
Indaba analysed this data on behalf of the African conference participants.
We would also like to take the opportunity to appreciate Wikimedia
Foundation support including Asaf Bartov and Kacie Harold from Community
Engagement, Jack Rabah from the Global Reach Team, and Zack McCune from the
Communications Team.

Greetings,
Today, a court sitting in Ankara banned access to Wikipedia. The reason for
the ban is not clear but a statement credited to Turkey's communications
ministry said " Wikipedia was attempting to run a smear campaign against
Turkey ". Well, its seems the ban was imposed following a failed attempt by
the government to control Wikipedia's contents.[1]
You may want to contribute to a proposed community's response to the ban. I

I can not imagine that they really can block it. When I lived in Iran,
lots of pages were blocked. Most people I knew had *Psiphone* on the
computer and also on their USB-sticks. Nice little programme, faster
than Thor, and channels you around nearly all blocks. Still slows down
the net somewhat. I think only the Chinese are good enough to make even
this hard to handle. I use it also nowadays, when US-sites tell me that
I cannot view this or that from my location. Psiphone allows me to
choose the country from which I present myself. (But you cannot edit
wikipedia from a proxy programme like this)
Usually censorship is not too smart. Be smarter! Greetings from Dar es

I am happy to draw the attention of active Wikimedia User Group in Africa
to a just concluded discussion on Wikimedia Commons where it was
established that images taken by community members at Wikimedia events may
be attributed to the user group provided all the photographers (who are
community members) agree to it rather than wrongly uploading them as "Own
work" by the organizers.[1]
There are cases where organizers of Wikimedia event upload images taken at
the event as 'Own work" when they are clearly not the photographer who took
those images (such as the Iranian Wikimedia User Group issue that led to
the discussion). When told to correctly attribute the works, they sometimes
say " My camera was used, so I am the copyright holder" , " I organized the
event" or "The images were taken by some members of the user group and I
don't know who took XYZ images" . Yes, this is possible if different people
were asked to take images either with their personal camera or equipment
belonging to the organizers. Regrettably, these images usually get
nominated for deletions by Commons's user per the community precautionary
principle (COM:PRP) if not properly attributed [2]
In the course of the discussion I noted above, a user created a template
for Iranian Wikimedia User Group which was really useful in resolving the
aforementioned copyright issue. I am drawing the attention representatives
of user groups to this template with the hope that they can adopt it and
use it when a case like this occur.

Dear All
The Wiki Loves Africa team are pleased to announce the forth and final winner of the Wiki Loves Africa 2016 prize. The Organizers Prize goes to the Nubian Flute Player by Ahmed Emad H (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nubian_flute_player.jpg <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nubian_flute_player.jpg>).
The Community Prize was cancelled for the 2016 competition as there was not enough participation from within the community. Of those that did vote, a few seemed to be concerned with tampering with the vote. After a long and hard decision and time spent going through the contributions of each voter, the organisers decided to not award the Community Prize at all this year. This was tough decision made as the bid to influence the vote is not within the spirit of the Wikimedia movement. We felt that, as the stewards of the WMF’s grant, we could not justify awarding the prize under this dark cloud.
As the organisers of the competition we have awarded the Organisers Prize to Nubian Flute Player by Ahmed Emad H as it displays excellent framing and use of colour and light, as well as beautifully depicting on a rarely seen corner, in this case Nubia in Egypt, of this vast continent. Recent Wiki Events
AfroCROWDers make history during Black History and Women's History Months, 2017
Black History Month:AfroCROWD actively participated in [25] Black WikiHistory Monthnational outreach campaign for the third year in a row this February, helping bring together members of the community and general public to contribute content related to black history on Wikipedia.
We began the month with an edit-a-thon at noted management firm Accenture,partnering with their African American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) for a fun event that focused on the contributions of the African American community in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Then we headed to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culturein Harlem for our a Black History Month Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in honor of the Center's Black Power! exhibit. For the first time via video and satellite link, we heard from Wikipedia editors who were also editing on the topic of Black History Month in Ghana, Ivory Coast and other parts of the continent of Africa. An international effort.
The following day we book-ended our Black History Month celebrations with a meetup at theAce Hotel, New York City focused on Wikimedia's new WikiData technology. Wikidata is an exciting new way to input and update data, including information pertinent to the black community, using games and other query methods via Wikipedia.
Women's History Month:The coming of March meant the commencement of Women's History Month during which we joined the Fashion Institute of Technology and our friends at [26] Art+Feminismfor a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Black women fashion designers.

We also teamed up with with black artist initiative, the Black Lunch Table,for a breakout seminar on women artists at the annual Art+FeminismWikipedia edit-a-thon conference at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The event attracted participants from all over North America, including yellow capped students from local Democracy Prep High Schoolwho visited our MoMA session.
