Dear all,
I am happy to announce that applications to attend WikiCite ‘17 officially open
today <https://goo.gl/forms/Kb9Wl6Xfw2EmFqEr2>.
About the event
WikiCite 2017 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite_2017> is a 3-day
conference, summit and hack day to be hosted in Vienna, Austria, on May
23-25, 2017. It expands on efforts started last year at WikiCite 2016
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite_2016/Report> to design a central
bibliographic repository, as well as tools and strategies to improve
information quality and verifiability in Wikimedia projects.
Our goal is to bring together Wikimedia contributors, data modelers,
information and library science experts, software engineers, designers and
academic researchers who have experience working with Wikipedia's citations
and bibliographic data.
WikiCite 2017 will be a venue to:
-
Day 1. (Conference) – present progress on existing work and initiatives
for citations and bibliographic data across Wikimedia projects
-
Day 2. (Summit) – discuss technical, social, outreach and policy
directions
-
Day 3. (Hack) – get together to build, based on new ideas and
applications

Hello
Me again.
We have a whole collection of good images from Egypt.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Mohamed_kamal_1984
Problem is that there are hardly any description for those. The titles
seem fairly different from images to images, so I guess the titles could
include interesting information about those images that would help
categorize them.
But neither Ji-elle nor I speak any Arabic.... so we are a bit lost there.
Any support from an arabic person to better describe (in English or in
French) or categorize those images would be welcome.
Thanks
Florence
Hey guys

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Call for Elections Committee members
To: <wikimediaannounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, Wikimedia Mailing List <
wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
The Wikimedia Foundation StandingElections Committee is, from today
until February 17, seeking additional members to help facilitate
Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustee and Funds Dissemination Committee
elections. This is a volunteer role and the appointment is for two
years. Please note that, while you are a member of the Committee, you
will not be able to run for any election overseen by the Committee –
this includes the upcoming 2017 Board and FDC elections and any other
election where the committee had already begun formal preparation before
your departure. You will also be restricted in your ability to publicly
advocate for community members running in those elections.
The Elections Committee has the following duties, as defined by a July
2015 Board Resolution
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Elections_Committee>:
*
The Committee shall recommend the dates, rules, and regulation of
the voting procedures for approval by the Board of Trustees pursuant
to Article IV, Section 3(C) in the Foundation Bylaws
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Bylaws%7CWikimedia>.
*
The Committee shall recommend who is qualified to vote for the Board
of Trustees pursuant to Article IV, Section 3(C) in the Wikimedia
Foundation Bylaws <https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Bylaws>.
*
The Committee shall be responsible for preparing recommendations for
the dates, rules and regulation of the voting procedures for the
Funds Dissemination Committee
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Funds_Dissemination_Committee>,
and the Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson, consistent with
the charter of the Funds Dissemination Committee.
*
To the extent possible, the Committee shall consult with the wider
Wikimedia community in developing and revising election procedures
within the scope of this charter.
*
The Committee shall be a source of information to any member of the
Wikimedia community interested in the community selection processes
of the Wikimedia Foundation.
*
Under the direction of the Board Governance Committee, the Committee
shall take actions as necessary to execute the selection process for
the Board of Trustees, the Funds Dissemination Committee, and the
Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson.
*
As needed, the Committee may assist with other duties as may be
assigned by the Board or the Board Governance Committee.
In practice, a member's duties involve communicating with the global
committee who help to steward Board and FDC Elections. During an
election period – one of which is over the next three to four months –
this will be especially important as you help to run the upcoming
elections for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees and the Funds
Dissemination Committee. During this period, members of the Elections
Committee meet for semi-regular meetings to discuss the current election.
However, this appointment is not just for election periods. Outside of
the election season you will lead community discussions on election
process and advise the Board of Trustees Governance Committee
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_Governance_Commi…
>as
requested, such as in their search for appointed board members. The
expected time commitment can range from around 10 hours a week during an
election to one or two hours outside of the election period.
If you'd like to apply please send an email to
bec-newmembers(a)lists.wikimedia.org with:
*
Your username;
*
A brief summary of your Wikimedia related experience and any other
experience you think may be useful along with;
*
Why you're interested in the role and a quick statement saying you
understand the requirements.
Given the private information that committee members handle, candidates
must be 18 years of age or older, and be willing to sign the
confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Confidentiality_agreement_for_nonpublic_inf…
>if
they haven't already. You can view information on how to sign this on
Meta-Wiki
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Confidentiality_agreement_for_nonpublic_inf…
>.
As much as possible we want the committee to represent the diversity of
the Wikimedia movement so if you're interested please apply! If you know
of others, not on this list, who may want to apply please feel free to
forward.
KTC,
On behalf of the Elections Committee

Hi All,
I hope all is well and greetings from the just ended Wiki Indaba in Accra,
Ghana. Just to quickly update the community, Indaba was fun and highly
informative. There were 50 people in attendance spanning three continents,
including Africa, Europe and North America.
In order to share with the community what ensued, each delegate is required
to organize a follow up event in their various countries and so we urge you
to require of them their role to share in what they have learnt. You may
watch this* space on meta for reports and upcoming sessions

by some delegates. [1] You may also find pictures and presentations from
the conference here at *Category:Wiki Indaba 2017
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Indaba_2017>.* [2]
It was announced that the next Indaba to be held in 2018, will be
hosted by *Tunisia
:-)*. Dumisane and I have volunteered to provide support to the hosting
team and prepare a planning pack to reduce the hurdles in planning the next
Indaba. We are hereby inviting members of the community who are interested
in joining us to provide this support and an attempt to for once not make
Indaba just a local organizing team event. We have started the *Wikiindaba
Planning Pack

Lets endeavour to share the *African Mailing List*
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/african-wikimedians> to
members of our community and lets invite as many African Wikimedians here
as possible.[4] This will help to make this space a suitable place for
announcing African related subjects and concerns.

Hello everyone
Wiki Loves Africa 2016 is now closed ! Congratulations everyone !
I think a couple of people went to bed with blurry eyes from final
uploads and I hope Georges recovered a decent internet connexion to
finish his uploads today.
Christine and I finished fixing the tagging issue I discussed with some
of you yesterday by email (we'll talk more of this later to see how to
better deal with tagging next year).
So... in short... current grand total is 7817 pictures.
* Ivory Coast 1147
* Cameroun 852
* Nigeria 765
* Tunisia 731
* Ghana 638
* Ouganda 526
* Egypt 615
* Kenya 385
* Morroco 317
* South Africa 315
* Algeria 281
* Tanzania 190
It is to note that Morroco and South Africa were not specifically
supported within the WLA framework, and it is lovely to see those
figures for them.
Beyond figures... I am pleased to say that the quality of the pictures
is clearly on the rise.
- Increase of skills within the local teams ?
- Better photographic material ?
- More deals with professional photographers ?
- Better visibility of the contest bringing in more diverse participants ?
- More partnerships bringing in pictures ?
There are clearly several reasons to explain that.
But in any cases... great job.
I enjoyed seeing pictures from partners who emerged from the WLW
project, such as https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Gogeafrica
Or a winner of last year contest still around :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Mustapha_BRAHIM_DJELLOUL
So really... awesome job everyone !
--------
What's next ?
1. Voting... jury...
will be managed this year by Isla. If you want to help in setting up the
jury tool, the wiki pages for the community vote etc. get in touch with
her !
2. Reuse and categorization of images
Some teams have planned events to categorize and integrate images in
Wikipedia articles (great).
If it is not the case of your local team... please consider doing some
of it all by yourself. It is NOT hard.
To get the ball rolling... I made Asaf dream come true... the Dance
article did not really have any dance video featured. He was using that
example when talking to audience to illustrate the fact there was still
a LOT to do on Wikipedia.
Well... he will not be able to use that argument anymore... the Dance
article now has a dance video.
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dance&diff=prev&oldid=763008886
And the Kuduro article is illustrated : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuduro
So what about you ? What about going through a category of images
uploaded during WLAf and making sure to illustrate... 5 articles ? 10
articles ? More ?
Asaf probably still think there is a lot to do...
(but he probably needs to explain more about how to use Glamify... uh)
3. Quality
Please consider doing as Tunisian and Algerian teams do and work toward
having your best pictures recognised as quality pictures.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Quality_images_from_Wiki_Loves_…
In particular those teams who complained during WikiIndaba that Africa
UserGroups did not enjoy international recognition. Just do it :) Right
Shola ?
In particular as well those teams who would like to see one of their
photographer be added to the Best Photographers on Commons pool in the
future. Poke Georges...
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Meet_our_photographers
4. Documentation
Please do remember to send your documentation for expenses to Elisabeth
5. Brainstorm from WikiIndaba
I reported the notes here :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2016#Note…
Please feel free to add any further comments over there.
Cheers
Anthere
