The Schomburg Center, working with
AfroCROWD and the Wikimedia NYC community, will host the Black New York Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. Members of the community and the general public are invited to edit and contribute content related to Black history and culture on Wikipedia for the national Black Wiki History Month outreach campaign.
This year we will focus especially on Black New York, past and present, adding notable figures and places whose content is incomplete or completely missing from Wikipedia. Volunteers will be on-site to help you.
All are welcome! Bring your laptop.
This event is in partnership with The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the volunteers of Wikimedia New York City and AfroCROWD.

AfroCROWD is working with Oregon State University, Wikimedia Nigeria and the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Nigeria to organize an International Black History Month Wikipedia Editathon.
This workshop will equip users in both the United States and Nigeria and anyone joining us virtually, with the tools needed to login to Wikipedia with purpose and make edits that make a difference to the world's knowledge of Black history.

Wikipedia for Educators at Fordham in partnership with Digital Humanities NYC and Wikimedia NYC will be hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon focused on information and democracy on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus.
Refreshments, and a pizza reception following the event. This event is free and open to the public. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.
They will have a list of possible names and reference materials available but we encourage you to share ideas and suggestions of possible articles. Trainers will be on hand.

The Black Lunch Table (BLT) project will host an edit-a-thon focusing on important Staten Island history and culture of the African Diaspora from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm ET on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Building A, NY.
A training session will be held at the beginning, but help is available throughout the event. This event is free with museum admission.
A photographer will be taking free portraits for Wikipedia in our Black Lunch Table photo booth!
Please bring your laptop and a friend! The more, the merrier! Snacks provided.

AfroCROWD will present at the 2019 Art+Feminism GIANT Wikipedia Editathon at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York on March 3rd. Join us and Art+Feminism editors from beginners to experts from all over the country for a day dedicated to the contributions of women and non-binary visual artists on Wikipedia. Lunch is provided. AfroCROWD Global Organizers Summit gathers AfroCROWD branch organizers from Barcelona, London and Boston
During the final weekend in Janurary, AfroCROWD welcomed branch organizers Ivonne Gonzalez of Barcelona and Geneva (in hat at center), Kelly Foster of London (in glasses at center) and Kai Alexis Smith (front row) of Boston to meet with AfroCROWD community leaders to discuss the future of AfroCROWD and how we can continue to serve the African Diaspora from our headquarters in New York and around the world. |

The event took place in the Trustees Boardroom of the Brooklyn Central Library where AfroCROWD began nearly 4 years ago. Thank you to Mckensie Mack of Art+Feminism and Heather Hart of Black Lunch table for calling in to join us. Thanks also to the Brooklyn Library. This unifying meeting of the minds event led to some great ideas. We look forward to sharing them soon. |

AfroCROWD program director, Sherry Antoine, represented AfroCROWD speaking at the United Nations ITU Summit on the Digital Divide January 30th. The goal of the event? Discuss efforts to close the digital divide worldwide.
50% of the world is online- how do we leave no one behind? For us at AfroCROWD, a start is relevance through inclusion in not only internet content, but training in content creation by more women and people of every color and background, in their language, dialect, image and stage of technological capacity. Thanks to the embassy of Rwanda, Estonia, the Internet Society and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for having this event. |

AfroCROWD speaks on Wikipedia as a global movement at Wikipedia Day, New York, 2019
AfroCROWD was pleased to join fellow Wikipedia global inclusion organizers from Wikitongues, Columbia University's POEM project, and LaGuardia Community College along with discussion MC Abhishek Suryawanshi, to talk about Wikipedia as Global movement during Wikipedia Day 2019 at the Ace Hotel, NYC.
AfroCROWD has worked in partnership with our fellow organizers on translate-a-thons and oral history, for example, and presented our tutorial videos on the subject.

AfroCROWD Is now an official Wikimedia user group and has a new logo!
AfroCROWD is now an official Wikimedia User Group! Which means we get a new logo (left).
Don't worry we are still the same AfroCROWD Initiative to improve content and editorship about and by people of African Descent: just more flexible.
Wikimedia user groups are intended to be simple and flexible affiliates with far fewer requirements than chapters and thematic organizations.

AfroCROWD i.e. Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD) is an outreach initiative and Wikimedia usergroup, which seeks to increase awareness of the Wikimedia and free knowledge, culture and software movements among potential editors of African descent. Since its launch during Black Wiki History Month in 2015, AfroCROWD has sensitized thousands in its target audience about free culture crowdsourcing and the need to close the multicultural and gender gaps in Wikipedia. AfroCROWD has also held monthly multilingual edit-a-thons in partnership with cultural institutions, galleries, libraries, archives, museums (GLAM) and many others. AfroCROWD has also worked with professors at educational institutions like New York University, The New School, Icahn Medical School and Columbia University among others. AfroCROWD also organizes events to train future trainers in its target community.
