Just to remind you that any contribution you will make now will be under hopes that Wikimedia Foundation will be one of the selected organisations to take part in GSOC/18.
Also have a look at this. It has some good resources for contributing to MediaWiki. You will find bugs and tasks here and some easy task on the AWMD workboard.

Also you will always meet people from this mailing list on #wiki-dev-africa IRC channel.
