Newsletter #215: Accessing Wikidata items now possible from embedded function calls; Wikifunctions available on 65 Wikitionaries

The on-wiki version of this newsletter can be found here: https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Status_updates/2025-08-29 ---- Accessing Wikidata items now possible from embedded function calls Functions embedded in other Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia or the Wiktionaries (see also below for an exciting update) can now access entities from Wikidata. This allows you to access a Wikidata Item or Lexeme in an embedded function, and so pull knowledge out of Wikidata and display it in the result. Not only that: if an argument of type Wikidata Item Reference is left empty, we will default to the Wikidata Item attached to the page the function is being called on. That means, for example, that if you are on the Wikipedia article about a person, and are calling the age of a person in years <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z27758> function, it will automatically default to the correct Item. This also allows you to copy and paste the function call from one article to another without changes, and it will automatically apply to the connected Item! Our hope is that the ability to use Lexemes will become particularly useful for Wiktionaries. Wikifunctions available on 65 Wiktionaries We are available now on many more Wiktionaries! We have deployed the ability to call functions from Wikifunctions to 59 new Wikitionaries: Amharic, Old English, Aragonese, Aymara, Central Bikol, Belarusian, Banjar, Mandailing Batak, Cherokee, Sorani, Corsican, Kashubian, Zazaki, Faroese, Guarani, Goan Konkani, Gorontalo, Gujarati, Gun, Manx, Fiji Hindi, Upper Sorbian, Interlingue, Lojban, Karakalpak, Tyap, Greenlandic, Kashmiri, Cornish, Lingala, Minangkabau, Māori, Macedonian, Meitei, Maltese, Nahuatl, Nias, Punjabi (both Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi scripts), Southern Quechua, Aromanian, Kinyarwanda, Sindhi, Shawiya, Samoan, Somali, Swazi, Sesotho, Sundanese, Tigrinya, Turkmen, Tswana, Tok Pisin, Tsonga, Uyghur, Venetian, Volapük, Wolof, and Yiddish. They join the Bangla, Dagbani, Divehi, Hausa, Igbo, and Malayalam Wiktionaries, and now bring the set where Wikifunctions can be used to 65 Wiktionary language editions. Please do not use these projects to experiment unless you are a member of the given language community. These are small communities, and if they need to clean up experiments from eager Wikifunctions contributors, we would put more burden on them. We are planning to continue to roll out to more Wiktionaries soon-ish. We are particularly interested in thoughts the Wikifunctions community might have about functions that are useful for Wiktionaries. It also demonstrates how HTML functions can be created, and we hope for these to become available soonish to the projects we have deployed to. The instantiation fragment is now available in more than 17 languages! This is amazing! We would like to invite you to also contribute to the other fragments. If you need any help, please reach out to us. We are particularly interested if there are problems with certain fragments in any languages you speak, in order to see where the current system gets to its limits. Recent Changes in the software We have only a single direct code change going out this week, as we were mostly putting finishing touches to changes 'behind the scenes', which we'll report on later when they become relevant to the Wikifunctions community. One of the big things we're working on this Quarter is allowing embedded Wikifunctions calls to output rich text (T397402 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T397402>). This is so that you can *e.g.* display a conjugation table on a Wiktionary, or provide a contextual link in a Wikipedia fragment. This week, we landed the last piece of our preparatory security work (T398963 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398963>) by building a system to allow links in a very limited way: only to the local wiki or other known wikis in the cluster, without any other attributes ( T398987 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398987>). We're now supporting our colleagues in Security who will be undertaking an Application Security Review (T396486 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T396486>) that will decide if we're ready to enable it in production, and any follow-up work needed first. We, along with all Wikimedia-deployed code, are now using the latest version of the Codex UX library, v2.3.1, as of this week. We believe that there should be no user-visible changes on Wikifunctions, so please comment on the Project chat or file a Phabricator task if you spot an issue. At this year’s Wikimania <https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2025:Wikimania> in Nairobi, we presented on the current state of Wikifunctions, highlighting what the community has achieved so far. We discussed the results of our first live deployment to Wikimedia projects, what this means for editors and readers of those wikis, and our plans for further integration with other Wikimedia projects. The presentation was followed by a tutorial that provided an introduction to Wikifunctions. We gave a high-level overview and then did a set of introductory activities, each of which can be done on our project. These activities included finding and calling <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Catalogue> existing functions; creating new <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Suggest_a_function> and editing existing functions, tests, and implementations; and showing how community members are using these function calls on projects where Wikifunctions has been enabled. We focused on functions that generate sentences and fragments <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikifunctions:Abstrac…> in several languages. Recent Changes in the software In the past three weeks, we spent most of our time on the bigger pieces of work planned for this Quarter, but we also fixed a number of bugs. To unblock our Quarterly work to support Wikidata references in embedded Wikifunctions calls, we added a quick wrapper to make Wikibase's tracking nominally compatible with the modern parser (T398993 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398993>). We plan to work with Wikimedia Deutschland to build the proper version of this in the future, to fully support all use cases and other tools than ours (T397353 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T397353>). We have added support for default values for Wikidata items when inputs are left blank (T398733 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398733>). We also added some support for using Natural language (Z60) <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z60> references as inputs, as they're often needed when calling Functions related to Wikidata items and particularly Lexemes (T400165 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400165>), and allowed for default values for these being the page's display language (T400240 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400240>). More generally, we extended our integration with the VisualEditor so that it recognises all of these new default values as valid (T402177 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T402177>). As part of our work on Wikidata items support, we have added Z6007 <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6007> and associated updates for representing claims on-wiki (T399423 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T399423>). The server-side code to fill these went live on Thursday, so the new, expanded content is made available (T399424 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T399424>). Also, we've landed a change on-wiki to tweak the calendar options for Z6063/Calendar model <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6063> (T391208 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T391208>). Finally, we'll be adding Z861 <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z861> as a helper Function to let you easily create Z11/Monolingual strings <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z11>, mostly to support the Abstract Wikipedia prototyping work and similar efforts; this still needs the server-side code, which will come soon. Our thanks to User:SomeRandomDeveloper <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:SomeRandomDeveloper>, who found and provided a fix for a security issue that made it possible for any sysop on Wikifunctions.org (even if they didn't have edit-interface rights) to run bad code on editors' browsers (T400500 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400500>). Though never abused, this kind of risk is not acceptable for us, so we immediately deployed this fix. Thank you again! We have updated a few very rare Function-related rights, like changing how many values of true/false the system knew about, that were originally handed out to sysops; they're now more appropriately issued to Function maintainers. We fixed an issue where malformed language values would try to add an unknown language to the page's HTML (T400521 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400521>). We made a quick fix that might help PHP reason better about how to handle a null case when fetching Objects (T365728 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T365728>). We added logging around issues with cached results (T398410 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398410>). Finally, we reduced the noise from logging around failed requests where it might be intended, such as a Test case checking that dividing by zero throws an error (T397996 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T397996>). Our thanks to User:Zabe <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:Zabe> for their work helping all of Wikimedia code, including us, to upgrade to a new version of the database access layer, re-generating our SQL schema to match. We cleaned up some of our code around Objects' storage on, and loading from, the wikis to use dependency injection (T394839 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T394839>). We landed another patch from User:Zabe <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:Zabe> as part of Wikimedia-wide work to drop use of a deprecated database field (T36320 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T36320>), and another from User:SomeRandomDeveloper <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:SomeRandomDeveloper> adjusting a reference we were making to a class that is being moved (T402038 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T402038>); thank you both! We undertook a set of changes around how our code handles nested Functions, because they are error-prone due to confusion from our front-end (T398457 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398457>). First, we changed our canonicalisation code to be consistent between the middleware and back-end rather than sometimes renaming keys, then changing the front-end code to recognise that references in calls are "terminal", and shouldn't expand further, making the UX flow more easily in this rare edge case. Next, we changed how we show this kind of Function call in collapsed mode: showing a blank state instead of "Select …" if something's not been selected yet, except in edit mode, and showing the full call, with a different display if the called Function is defined through argument references. Finally, we added to the editing interface an ability to specify local keys manually when a Function call is dynamic and so can't be automatically completed by the UX. We fixed a UX bug in the Object selector to show the already-selected option, instead of "no results found" (T398453 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398453>). We've also changed the mode selector for Wikidata entity to also allow adding a Function call and not just an argument reference, which is sometimes needed (T400990 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400990>) *e.g.* when working with lexeme forms (T386553 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386553>). We've corrected our embedded Wikifunctions calls code to lower the cache time when inserting the day's date as a default value for a time. Finally, we've further expanded our testing for the API that embedded Wikifunctions calls make when a used input Type does not have a reader Function, or the used output Type does not have a display Function. News in Types: Wikidata geo-coordinate Recently Wikifunctions started importing Wikidata statements containing values of the new Wikifunctions types Wikidata quantity <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6010>, Wikidata geo-coordinate <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6011>, and Wikidata time <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6064>. In the last update we described Wikidata quantity; here we give an overview of Wikidata geo-coordinate. Each instance of Wikidata geo-coordinate (which corresponds directly to the geo-coordinates datatype <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase/DataModel#Geographic_locations> on Wikidata) contains 4 components: *latitude*, *longitude*, *precision* (all of type Rational number <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z19677>), and *globe* (of type Wikidata item reference <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6091>). *Latitude* and *longitude* are required to be present; *precision* is optional and, when its value is missing from imported Wikidata content, is filled in with Z24/void <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z24>. *Globe* usually refers to the Wikidata item for Earth (Q2 <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2>), but can also refer to other astronomical bodies. To support more natural implementations in JavaScript and Python of functions that take or return instances of Wikidata geo-coordinate, there are converter functions to and from each of those languages. Going from ZObject instance *to* JavaScript, Convert from Wikidata geo-coordinate <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z25954>, JavaScript converts each Rational number to a BigInt, extracts the Wikidata identifier of the globe from the Wikidata item reference <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6091>, and collects these 4 elements into a single JavaScript Object. Convert from Wikidata geo-coordinate, Python <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z26186> provides similar conversions resulting in a Python dictionary. Going in the other direction, the converters *from* those two languages reverse the transformations. <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/File:Hickory_coordinates_statement_Wikif…> <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/File:Tycho_coordinates_statement_Wikifun…> We’d particularly like to highlight the versatile display and read functions, prepared primarily by community member 99of9. The display function builds on the existing Rational number display function to show the latitude and longitude in decimal form (preserving the number of decimal places that appears in Wikidata), and separated by commas. If the *globe* item is anything other than Earth, the display function also presents its label, retrieved from Wikidata. The read function, in addition to reading those two numbers (and accommodating a variety of language-specific number formats), employs a lookup table to recognize the names, in many different languages, of the bodies of our solar system, and map them to the identifier for the corresponding Wikidata item (from which it can reconstruct the original Wikidata item reference <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6091>). The screenshots show the statements containing the coordinate locations of Hickory, North Carolina (Wikidata item Q2028564 <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2028564>) and the Tycho crater (Wikidata item Q631696 <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q631696>) on the moon, including the output of the display function (under the word “value”). These statements show up in this way when the items are fetched using Fetch Wikidata item <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6821>. We will highlight the current state of the project, showing what the community has achieved so far, and also discuss the results of our first live deployment to Wikimedia projects, what this means for editors and readers of those wikis, and our plans for further integration with other Wikimedia projects. The presentation will be followed by a tutorial that will provide an introduction to Wikifunctions and how you can use it. We will first give a high-level overview of Wikifunctions. We will then do a set of introductory activities, each of which can be done through the wikifunctions.org site. These activities will include finding and calling existing functions; creating new and editing existing functions, tests, and implementations; and showing how community members are using these function calls on projects where Wikifunctions has been enabled. News in Types I: Wikidata quantity Recently Wikifunctions started importing Wikidata statements containing values of the new Wikifunctions types Wikidata quantity <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6010>, Wikidata geo-coordinate <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6011>, and Wikidata time <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6064>. As mentioned in the July 10 update <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Status_updates/2025-07-10>, such statements show up inside imported Wikidata entities (items, properties, lexemes, lexemes forms, and lexemes senses). In this update we'd like to take a closer look at Wikidata quantity <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6010>. Each instance of Wikidata quantity (which corresponds directly to the quantity datatype on Wikidata <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase/DataModel#Quantities>) contains 4 components: *amount*, *lower bound*, *upper bound* (all of type Rational number <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z19677>), and *unit* (of type Wikidata item reference <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6091>). *Lower bound* and *upper bound*, when present, are used to indicate an inexact number, with a range of possible values around the given *amount*. We'd especially like to highlight the excellent display <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z25326> and read <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z25785> functions provided by community member 99of9 <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:99of9>. These functions make it possible for users to easily recognize and enter quantities using familiar formats. For example, the Wikidata quantity for the speed of light <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7575582>, in metre per second <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q182429>, displays as 299,792,458 m/s, as shown by this test case <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z25330>. Conversely, the read function makes it possible to enter that same string in the UI, and have it automatically instantiated as a Wikidata quantity. To determine the abbreviation of the specified unit, the display function consults Wikidata, using functions fetch Wikidata item <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z6821> and unit symbol of item <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z23136> to retrieve the given Wikidata item and extract its value for the property unit symbol <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P5061>. Going in the other direction, the read function relies on a giant dictionary of Wikidata unit symbols, which is embodied in the JavaScript implementation of QID from unit symbol <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Z25792>. In the case of an inexact quantity (one including lower and upper bound values), the display function presents the bounds using *±* when the amount is midway between the 2 bounds, and a bracketed notation for other cases. For example, a quantity with *amount* 6, *lower bound* 4, and *upper boun*d 8, displays as 6±2. An example involving greater precision is provided by the Wikidata item permittivity of vacuum <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6158>, the value of which displays in Wikifunctions as 0.0000000000088541878128±0.0000000000000000000013 F/m (farad per metre <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21294882>). A quantity with amount 2.5, lower bound 1.9, and upper bound 4.6 displays as [≥1.9; 2.5; ≤4.6] (which can appear with or without a unit). The read function accepts these formats as well. Both functions accommodate (one or two) missing bounds and a missing unit. Both the read and display functions are configured for language customizations, allowing language-specific functions to be used when a language is associated with a particular format. For example, when called with Italian as the display language, the bracketed example above appears with commas, as [≥1,9; 2,5; ≤4,6]. There is work to be done to provide language-specific handling, and contributions are encouraged! Given this Type, as a community we should probably now come to a decision what to do with related Type proposals, such as SI units <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Type_proposals/SI_units>, unit of measurement <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Type_proposals/Unit_of_mea…>, and value with error <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Type_proposals/Value_with_…> . News in Types II: Grammatical number (singular / plural) and animacy We have implemented the Type proposals for grammatical number (singular / plural) <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Type_proposals/Grammatical…>. We invite you to add more proposals for other grammatical number systems. We also implemented the type proposal for grammatical gender (animate / inanimate) <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Type_proposals/Grammatical…>. Note that I chose to call it grammatical animacy per discussion — but also that that’s just a label, and the community should feel free to change that. Recent Changes in the software Last week we made a bit of progress on our major, planned pieces of work, as well as a number of fixes. This week is our "Fix-It" week, the week every two months where we focus on fixing bugs and technical debt, so expect yet more fixes next week. One of the current pieces of Quarterly work is to add support for using Wikidata references in embedded Function calls (T397403 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T397403>). For this, we added an interface in the VisualEditor dialog to lookup Wikidata items or lexemes ( T399565 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T399565>). We also added the back-end code to support this access (T398731 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398731>). We changed the close button in the VisualEditor dialog for embedded Function calls to be a button to go back to the search page (T395478 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T395478>), based on usability findings ( T397411 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T397411>). We fixed the enum selector component to work correctly when the selected Object is not in the first page (T388660 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T388660>). We fixed the mis-aligned visual display of the empty language "chip" for monolingual strings, as part of diagnosing why a number of them had been created in a malformed state (T400271 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400271>). We also fixed the 'error' icon shown in the VisualEditor context display so that it is fully visible, and not squished. We went through some of the front-end Vue code and fixed a few TODOs and made some small other fixes. We upgraded our Vue testing library to the latest version, which let us add simpler timeouts to our tests. This also allowed us to better test the Function explorer component in circumstances like after the form has been reset. Timo Tijhof from the MediaWiki group found that one of our common API end-points was not caching due to a typo of `s-max-age` instead of `s-maxage` in the HTTP header (T400434 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400434>). We slightly sped up the execution of embedded Function calls by re-using the new caching system when loading referenced Functions and Types in the handler (T385619 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T385619>). With thanks to our colleague Volker E., we've switched our use of `color-visited` CSS to re-use Codex's mixin instead of specifying directly, for on-going consistency (T400300 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400300>). We also tweaked a production log that was alerting on bad user input, rather than the error state of no languages being available at all. We, along with all Wikimedia-deployed code, are now using the latest version of the Codex UX library, v2.2.1, as of this week.
