Newsletter #195: It's about time

This clock was made in about 1390 and is the world's oldest known clock with its original dials. Time is one of the most important data values in Wikidata: Wikidata has more than a billion time values. In Wikifunctions, we already support Gregorian calendar dates, but the data model for Wikidata has a more complex representation of time. In order to support the creation of a type for time that is compatible with Wikidata, we have analysed the existing time values in Wikidata, are describing the data model as it is used and as it was envisioned, and are sketching out part of the way for Wikifunctions to work with those values. Recent Changes in the software This week we have one immediately user-facing change, and some behind-the-scenes work. The biggest new feature is that we now integrate with the MediaWiki search tool (T262088 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T262088>). This means that the search box at the top of the page will have type-ahead matching to Objects' labels and aliases across languages, and ZIDs. It will display how it matched to each item, and display their Type; if they're Functions, it will also show their return Type. This is a first attempt at providing something useful here, and we anticipate extending it in future, but it should at least help the majority of cases, especially for newbies who arrive on one Wikifunctions page and are looking for another. Note that this search tool is only available in the Vector-2022 skin; in the legacy experiences, you will have the old search experience, as those unfortunately can't be extended but only replaced. We've added five internationalisation messages for the wikifunctions.org sidebar that can now be used there, and translated on TranslateWiki.net like the rest of the interface (T389497 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T389497>). If there are other messages that should be widely-available, please get community consensus and then ask for them to also be added to the translation system. On the Wikipedia integration, we've landed one feature and one fix. The client UX for adding and editing Wikifunctions calls in articles was expanded to allow Types that are enums, like months or eras (T387368 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T387368>); our last planned support before release is Types with read Functions ('parsers'), like numbers. We also tweaked our cross-wiki recent changes integration to exit in non-client mode, such as in some test edge cases, which was causing some breakages. We fixed the code that fetches Wikidata items to include literal ZObjects for each instance of Z60/Natural language <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z60> and Z6040/Wikidata statement rank <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z6040>, instead of a Z9/Reference <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z9> (T388117 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T388117>, T388448 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T388448>, and T386426 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386426>.) We expanded our tests around the APIs that let you create Objects to give more assurance, and fix a minor bug. Our browser tests were tweaked as part of across-the-fleet fixes to be more consistently async-aware (T389536 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T389536>). Newsletter #194: Wikidata-based simple enumerations

But it is becoming clear that some of the use cases served by the current enumerations could be served with much less work for the community if we introduced a slightly different form of enumerations: Wikidata-based enumerations. For example, there are suggestions for Types for grammatical genders. And we might have a Type for grammatical genders with two values for feminine and masculine (*e.g.* in Tuareg or French), and a Type for grammatical genders with three values for feminine, masculine, and neuter (*e.g.* in Telugu or German). In the way our system currently works, that would mean that we would need to create two different Types, and distinct objects for each of the two Types. Which means we would need many labels in many different languages being maintained, and confusing explanations like "this masculine is for languages with three grammatical genders". We further would need to map those objects to Wikidata items in lots of places so that Functions could reliably map to Lexemes. We were discussing alternatives in the last few weeks, and came up with an idea we wanted to suggest: *Wikidata-based enumerations*. Wikidata-based enumerations is a new kind of enumeration Types. They will be created from a list of Wikidata item references representing the different objects of the enumeration. Different Wikidata-based enumerations can share the same Wikidata item references, *e.g.* the feminine gender can be part of several such Types. Since we use Wikidata items to represent the values of the Type, we can also directly use their labels from Wikidata, reducing maintenance and work for these Types considerably. We are currently working on finishing up the design of this new kind of Types, and plan to develop in the upcoming Quarter – so this is the right time for feedback! One open question is how to deal with existing Types, which would have benefitted from this method, such as Gregorian calendar months. Technically, there is no need to switch existing enumerations to the new kind of Wikidata-based enumerations. But there might be an advantage in doing so, due to the maintenance of labels on Wikidata. In the end it is up to the community to decide on how to proceed. My suggestion would be to wait until the new kind of enumeration has shown that it works, and then to decide. We will be happy to help with the transition. Since we want to use this new kind of enumeration Type where it makes sense, we have paused the creation of new enumerations that could benefit from the new Type for now. Recent Changes in the software There are relatively few changes shipping this week, as we home in on completing our work for the Quarter. As part of the Wikidata support work, we've expanded Z6006/Wikidata lexeme sense <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z6006> to include a new key, ' Z6006K4/lexeme <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z6006>' (T388086 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T388086>). This will allow us to better represent the relationships between lexemes and their senses. We updated the front-end code to streamline our use of mixins and utils, as part of our work to embed Wikifunctions calls inside Wikipedia articles. We expanded the test coverage of the middleware API that handles embedded function calls, so we're more confident it will operate as designed. We've landed the majority of the code to show entries in Recent Changes on wikis that will use Wikifunctions in their articles about changes made of Wikifunctions.org, in the same way that Wikidata does (T386090 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386090> and T386089 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386089>). Our work on back-end performance continues, with work to replace use of JSON Schema validation with simpler, hand-built heuristics (T381597 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T381597>) and unifying our Type-checking logic to reduce data conversions (T383575 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T383575>). We've added support for a natural language, Z1967/mrt <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z1967>, as part of wider work to add that to MediaWiki (T388157 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T388157>). This is the last main part of our planned Wikidata improvement works for the current Quarter (until the end of March 2025), though we're going to keep iterating based on your feedback. In the workstream for being able to call Wikifunctions from Wikipedia articles, we added code to show error states in the context item pop-up in the visual editor (T387377 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T387377>), and adjusted the special search API to exclude Functions that don't have any community-approved Implementations, as they're not 'runnable' (T386121 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386121>), and fixed how we call embedded Function calls to make sure the display and read Functions are hooked up correctly. We improved test coverage of the code in this area, to avoid as much as possible any issues before it's ready for launch. We spotted that most of our production noise was coming from some test runs getting malformed Objects stored in the database cache; we added a patch that will delete malformed entries before re-running, rather than just complaining about them. We fixed several test breakages, some in our browser tests related to timing issues now that we're trying to run them in a new environment (T387540 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T387540>), and one related to changes in MediaWiki core. We have added support for one natural language, Z1966/en-in <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z1966> (Indian English), thanks to User:Feeglgeef <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:Feeglgeef> (T387546 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T387546>). We, along with all Wikimedia-deployed code, are now using the latest version of the Codex UX library, v1.20.3, as of this week. This old feature led to bugs and cache problems, and was not compatible with the new direction MediaWiki is going. This change makes wikitext links to Objects less magical, but preserves the usefulness on Special:RecentChanges <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges> and other important tools, similar to how Wikidata handles this. In terms of smaller features, we're shipping a few this week, but very sweet ones: We have improved the collapsed view where there are calls using Types compounded of multiple inner values, like Z16683/Integers <https://www.wikifunctions.org/view/en/Z16683>, to use the display functions (T368324 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T368324>). We have also improved the collapsed view of argument reference inside function calls, using the icon rather than the label for "argument reference" and so being more compact (T383883 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T383883>). We now prompt Implementation writers that they can use Wikifunctions.Debug in their code to work out what's going wrong, and remind them to remove it before publishing (T355848 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T355848>). We landed another keyboard accessibility improvement from User:Abbe98 <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:Abbe98>, this time to make the ZID in the page title focusable, and allow its copy-to-clipboard feature to be triggered by pressing <Enter>. Thank you! As part of our fixing bugs, we tweaked the styles of the short description input so that it doesn't overflow the column in narrower windows (T385993 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T385993>). We fixed a bug that meant pressing the close button on the "in other languages" box didn't work; thanks to User:99of9 <https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/User:99of9> for reporting that (T386315 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386315>). We replaced our custom code for the ModeSelector (move up/move down/delete control) with the newer Codex standard "MenuGroup" component, which will be more accessible and updated more consistently with the rest of the UX ( T384520 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T384520>). We also landed a major part of our code to integrate Wikifunction calls in wikitext with the visual and the 2017 wikitext editors, which we hope to show off soon! In terms of engineering changes, we have expanded the testing for some of our critical code around setting up the page, as part of splitting this code up between 'client' code for Wikipedias and 'repo' code for Wikifunctions.org. This also allowed us to finally land a great patch from Aditya Kumar from late last year that use more robust tools to manipulate the URLs of pages we create links to, like history or edit pages (T360229 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T360229>). We updated our front-end Pinia store code to replace anonymous getter functions with named functions, to help with profiling (T386188 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386188>). We fixed a bug in our logging that meant some monitoring didn't pass server-side validation (T385820 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T385820>). We updated the selenium browser tests to adjust for the new Codex table usage we rolled out two weeks ago (T387540 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T387540>), as part of wider work to run these tests in CI again.
