As part of T113210 [1], which is a broader discussion on track for the
developer summit, I am hosting an IRC office hour [2] this Thursday at
19:00 UTC.
Since shared hosting is a broad topic, this session will focus specifically
on brainstorming ways to reconnect with the shared hosting community.
Shared hosting mediawiki users are currently underrepresented in the
greater mediawiki community. We rarely run into them in phabricator, on
gerrit or on the mailing lists. Which means that people often have to think
on their behalf about their use cases and issues, instead of getting direct
input.
There must be practical ways to bring those thousands of mediawiki users
back into the fold, so to speak. Hopefully we can come up with interesting
ideas to achieve that.
And if you happen to be a shared hosting user, by all means, please join
this IRC office hour :)

Dear all,
I don't know if it is appropriate to discuss this here but I believe I can get a useful advice here. The Nigerian language Wikipedia projects (Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo) need urgent attention. English language is the official language in Nigeria but the Yoruba language constitutes one of the major languages in Nigeria. The other two languages are Igbo and Hausa.
Today, Yorubas along with the Igbos are the most educated ethnic groups in Africa but in spite of this potentials, there are poor readership level and contributions to the Yoruba Wikipedia projects. In fact, several existing and prospective Wikipedia editors as well as scholars and student who can contribute significantly to the project are not even aware of the existence of the Yoruba Wikipedia. Speaking in March 2012, in Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria, Jimmy Wales said: Wikipedia has seven active editors working in Yoruba language ("[http://m.voanews.com/a/wikipedia-co-founder-adding-more-african-languages-1…), an extremely low number, less than 0.0001% of active editors on the English Wikipedia. In fact, the seven active editors have reduce to 1 or 2. The truth is, I can't point to any active editors contributing in that project.
The Wikimedia User Group Nigeria under the leadership of Olaniyan Olusola will need every supports at the disposal of the WMF to preserve the Project. We are currently planning to organize a conference entitled "WikiYoruba 2016" that will involve Yoruba Language scholars and student who can contribute to the project.
I'm a native speaker of Yoruba language with good written skills in Yoruba language. I'm an experienced Wikipedian who has created over 500 articles on the English Wikipedia and I intend to use my experience to improve the Yoruba Wikipedia Project. You may also want to see (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Wikicology/100_articles_contribu…)
The Content translation tool is currently unsupported by Yoruba Language. Had it been its working, I would have translate hundreds of English Wikipedia contents.
Please we need the help and all forms of support to improve the project.
Cheers,
Olatunde Isaac (User:Wikicology)

By the way, was there any follow up at WMF to Risker's suggestion from
awhile ago that its budget get a peer review from a similarly situated
organization?
I've taken a peek at the discussions in the current round of FDC proposals.
I have some concerns about WMF staff critiquing the budgets of affiliates
while WMF's own budget practices are in need of improvement. I would like
to see WMF make efforts to improve that will be reflected in the new WMF
Annual Plan cycle. I am hoping that the WMF Board takes an interest in
these matters, particularly in light of concerns about fundraising targets
and top-line budget growth.
Thanks,
Pine

Andreas,
Thank you for this positive feedback. I can't comment on future banner
messages because I don't have the requisite knowledge.
Here's where we are right now... I've seen Megan and the fundraising team
really apply themselves on this concern. They've interviewed many people
and they are starting to collaborate with some of the people who have not
liked our banners.
I have no promises. None. I am just filling you in on the process. We're
also headed into the busiest times of our year and we are a small team so
we may not be able to update you in a timely fashion.

Hi everyone,
Thhank you all for your kind words.
We've had confirmation from almost every wikimedians living in Paris that
they're safe. The one we're waiting from are the one we don't have a way to
reach them.
At the same time, keep some thoughts for all the people in the Middle-East
that suffer and die on a daily basis at the hand of the same people. To the
people trying to flee from them.
And more than that, to all the people that die around the world because of
intolerance, misunderstanding and hatred.
Thank you all again.
Take care,

I agree that the WMF needs to slow its growth and look at stabilizing
around its currently level of funding. Continuing to grow at 20% is simply
not sustainable while maintaining our values and our reputation. I am not
yet sure what the rest of the board's position is on this matter but I
share many of the concerns raised here.

Dear everyone,
Help us collect the 15 best things about the Wikimedia movement (and
Wikipedia) from the last 15 years!
Community members all over the world and the Communications team, have been
preparing to celebrate the start of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.
On January 15, 2016, it will have been 15 years of collaborating,
collecting, verifying, and making knowledge free for the whole world.
As part of our annual report, we plan to once again share stories -- this
time celebrating the joy of knowledge and discovery. We want to include
some of the most amazing, strange, cool, and unbelievable things about the
last 15 years.
There is a page started on Meta.[1] We know they balance to enWP right now,
so we are especially appreciative of additions about the rest of the
movement. Please add things we've missed, make corrections to anything
that's not correct, and commenting on your favorite.
Thanks so much for taking the time to improve this!

Thank you for posting the staff assessments, Katy, and the
subject-matter expert feedback[1], Wes. We really appreciate all the
work that goes into reviewing the proposals.
We did find a few areas that we felt still needed clarification – in
some cases the assessment seemed to contradict itself as well as the
subject-matter expert feedback. We hope that our short comments on the
talk page[2] contribute to the deliberations and help the FDC make
informed decisions.
Kind regards,
Nicole

Dear all,
Centre for Internet and Society' Access To Knowledge (CIS-A2K) program
would like to share with you the newsletter below for the month of
October 2015. We look forward to hear any feedback or input you might have.
== 1000 Marathi books by Marathi-language non-profit to come online on
Marathi Wikisource with Open Access ==
As the Maharashtra Granthottejak Sanstha (MGS), a non-profit
organization working for the preservation of the "Peshwa" culture in
Maharashtra, and based in Pune, India, celebrated its 121st anniversary
recently, the organization relicensed 1000 books for Marathi Wikisource
under CC-by-SA 4.0 license so that the books could be digitized and be
made available for millions of Marathi readers. Avinash Chaphekar from
the organization signed a document permitting Wikimedians to digitize
the books on the Wikisource. On this special occasion of the
anniversary, a three-day book exhibition was organized starting October 30.
Answering our question "Could you please share with us your ideas of
opening these invaluable books for Wikisource? How they are going to be
useful for the online readers to learn about the Peshwas?", Mr Chaphekar
says:
“These books are of historical importance and cover topics that are
rarely covered well anywhere else. This information should reach to more
people. Right after our Prime Minister Narendra Modi recommended to read
the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin as it contains a lot of messages
for a common man, a lady walked to us once and asked if she can read
this Marathi. Such books that were published by the Sanstha should not
be kept closed as a lot many readers are searching for such books. We
might not have a very great presence in the media or the Internet. How
does any reader who does not know us buy a book? If these books are
available online they could at least find and read them”.

Sobhaann to enrich Konkani Wikipedia:
Mannd Sobhaann (http://www.manddsobhann.org/), a private organization
working for unification of Konkani people around the world, preservation
and promotion of Konkani language and culture, has recently relicensed 3
of their published books under a CC-by-SA 4.0
(https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0) license. Erik Ozario,
founder of the organization has kindly permitted to open these books
under free license so they get digitized on Konkani Wikisource
(https://wikisource.org/wiki/Main_Page/Konkani) and contribute in
enriching the Goan Konkani Wikipedia (https://goo.gl/780B6r). Thanks to
our friend Harriet Vidyasagar
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Outofindia) for helping in acquiring
these books.
⬤ Odia Wikisource 1st anniversary celebration: (https://goo.gl/nXRmvr)
Odia Wikimedia community celebrated Odia Wikisource's first anniversary
at the Institute on Management of Agricultural Extension (IMAGE),
Siripur, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Jeeban Panda and Puspashree Pattnaik from
Bhubaneswar based non-profit Srujanika presented the organization's
journey in digitizing over 150K folios of many Odia-language books. They
also announced relicensing Srujanika’s entire publication (over 700
books) under a free license and digitizing them Wikisource. These books
include various science publications by the organization over last two
decades. In a panel discussion about the "need for digital platforms for
Odia books", participated noted linguist Debi Prasanna Pattnaik,
Professor Jatin Nayak, Sudhir Pattnaik, Editor, Samadrusti and Anil
Pradhan, Editor, Sikhya Sandhan. The community also had a day long
discussion about setting priorities and goals for the project in the
coordination of the project's administrator Mrutyunjaya Kar
(https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/or:User:MKar). There was a survey made
where Wikimedians reflected their views on various activities.
⬤ Wikipedia Workshop at Sinhgad Institute of Technology and Sciences:
This workshop was aimed at introducing Wikipedia to the engineering
undergraduate students use the Marathi Wikipedia to disseminate what
they are learning in Marathi-language. About 11 students took part and
learned input in Marathi and Wikipedia in various topics of their interest.
== Upcoming events: Train-a-Wikipedian ==
CIS-A2K is going to start a new project Train-a-Wikipedian (TAW,
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Train-a-Wikipedian). In February
and June this year, CIS-A2K conducted Train the Trainer (TTT,
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/Train_the_Trainer_Program) and
MediaWiki Train the Trainer (MWTTT,
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MWTTT). After conducting these two
events, and communicating with the participants the need to start a
training program on regular basis was felt and designing the
"Train-a-Wikipedian" program was initiated. Initially, the focus would
be on five Focus Language Areas (FLAs); a) Kannada, b) Konkani, c)
Marathi, d) Odia, and e) Telugu, and the program might be scaled up
slowly based on its first pilot implementation. The TAW page on
Meta-wiki (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/TAW), a number of topics are
listed that are going to be discussed. As not everything could be
imparted to every single participant, almost all the training sessions
are going to be custom-made where the learners will be independently
selecting topics of their own interest. Suggestions and inputs on this
program are welcome!

@subhapa / https://cis-india.org
Hi all,
I'm subscribed to wikimediaannounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org and it
receives constant posting of low interest posts such as "This month in GLAM" or
"The Signpost" stuff. This gets annoying because I expect the newsletter to
announce only really big announcements that interest me or require my
attention, and that appear infrequently.
There's also a risk similar to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Cried_Wolf that really significant
announcements will be ignored due to people getting used to not paying attention
to the less significant ones.
Can someone take it to heart? If it continues, I'll have to unsubscribe from
the newsletter.
Regards,
Shlomi Fish
