Sounds great all around, but I'd change the above to...

"The international community that supports Wikipedia. The idea was developed
in Germany, but this is an international project. All people who appreciate
Wikipedia's mission are invited to participate. Many of them have already
joined the initiative and signed the petition."

Or some similar edits, just to emphasize that lots of people who aren't
chapters or may not even know what a chapter is, are participating or have
voiced their support. :)
