Hoi,
Just a question, the WMF has invested a lot of effort in producing fonts
for many of the languages it supports. These fonts are better than the
fonts used in packages like Ubuntu.
Is there a problem in using the WMF supported font ? It certainly makes the
inconsistency in Ubuntu moot.

Unfortunately, the hard parts are identifying all
the font packages,
as package names for non-latin fonts seem to be wildly inconsistent
even between different Ubuntu releases. :(
Hm interesting. Concerning Tex everything went quite for me on Debian,
although Matthew shared Ubuntu's packet names. Is this relevant to the
article as well?
