The German Wikipedia has reached it's 20.000
article. We will send out a press
info soon. So I'd like to ask all the admins to not use heavy database
queries and not to do system updates the next few days - A heavy loaded
server is not the best thing to have when journalists are coming to look at
the project!
While I agree that we don't want a heavily loaded system, this
unfortunately conflicts a bit with wanting to not make updates and
potentially destablize things. :(
On Eloquence's suggestion, I've upgraded
de.wikipedia.org to the same
version of the wiki software that
www.wikipedia.org is running, so it
_does_ now include caching of pages to significantly reduce server load
during an influx of new visitors. (But does _not_ include the fancy new
experimental features in the development version that you'll see at
test.wikipedia.org.)
The main visible changes should be:
* 'Nicht angemeldet' is shown in the corner instead of your IP address
if you're not logged in. This is so we can store the pages and serve
them back to other people without having to re-render the whole page.
* The 'Diese Seite wurde bisher (Nummer) mal abgerufen.' message at the
bottom of pages is still there for now, but the hit count may not be
shown up to date for anon users, and will undercount anonymous visits.
* The article count on the main page may not keep up to date for users
who aren't logged in, as they will see a saved copy of the page. It will
update when the page is next edited, and logged-in users should always
see the current count.
(Note that the new version can use the alternate article count system --
links instead of commas -- but for now I have left it on the comma
count, so it won't change suddenly and dramatically. :)
If anything is more broken than usual ;) give out a shout.
