Idea: Why don't we just start and, come some time later in the year, we all try to gather consensus about the best looking Australian bid and agree to throw all our support (and the Wikimedia Australia official backing) behind that?<br>

As many of our big sponsors are located in SE Queensland (ie: Brisbane City<br>
Council, University of Queensland), I suspect they will not be all that<br>
interested in sponsoring and supporting an event outside of Brisbane or SE<br>
Queensland (we may be able to get away with Gold Coast, which is a large<br>
city in its own right, and within easy driving range of Brisbane itself, but<br>
it's not all that accessible from Europe/North America, despite having its<br>
own International Airport).<br>

Basically, what I was getting at, is that if we really want to have a decent<br>
chance of success, we need to begin doing this *now*, rather than waiting<br>
until a month before the deadline.<br>

With regard to the "Brisbane, where's that?" comment, I imagine that the Bid<br>
Evaluation team will be aware enough of the location of the city,<br>
particularly from us having bid before, that this will not be a problem.<br>
Brisbane has pretty much all of the advantages of Sydney and Melbourne<br>
(accessible, cosmopolitan), along with its own distinct advantages (good<br>
climate, proximity to tourist attractions, low costs). Also, in all my<br>
years interacting with foreigners both on and offline, nobody has had any<br>
trouble with recognising Brisbane as a city in Australia. I don't think<br>
that geographic obscurity is going to be that much of a problem, and it may<br>
even be an advantage, with Brisbane being seen as a more "exotic" location<br>
than Sydney or the usual "world city" suspects.<br>
