[Wikimediaau-l] Wikimania 2010?

I think we discussed this previously at some point, and I still think that it sounds like a good idea. We just need a mechanism for agreeing upon which bid is the best. The thing I'm concerned about is that people will just decide that while the other bids are all good, *theirs* is the best.
Anyway, I'm not opposed to a little healthy competition. And any help is certainly welcome =).
Cheers,
Craig

Idea: Why don't we just start and, come some time later in the year, we all try to gather consensus about the best looking Australian bid and agree to throw all our support (and the Wikimedia Australia official backing) behind that?
I am very interested in helping out the Brisbane team with this, if they'd like my help.

Unless there's some particular opposition, or current attempt at a bid by another Australian city, I support the Brisbane bid.
If the judges don't know where it is, they can look it up on Wikipedia.

I'm not sure, but I'll send a few exploratory emails and see if there's much
interest.
As many of our big sponsors are located in SE Queensland (ie: Brisbane City
Council, University of Queensland), I suspect they will not be all that
interested in sponsoring and supporting an event outside of Brisbane or SE
Queensland (we may be able to get away with Gold Coast, which is a large
city in its own right, and within easy driving range of Brisbane itself, but
it's not all that accessible from Europe/North America, despite having its
own International Airport).
Basically, what I was getting at, is that if we really want to have a decent
chance of success, we need to begin doing this *now*, rather than waiting
until a month before the deadline.
With regard to the "Brisbane, where's that?" comment, I imagine that the Bid
Evaluation team will be aware enough of the location of the city,
particularly from us having bid before, that this will not be a problem.
Brisbane has pretty much all of the advantages of Sydney and Melbourne
(accessible, cosmopolitan), along with its own distinct advantages (good
climate, proximity to tourist attractions, low costs). Also, in all my
years interacting with foreigners both on and offline, nobody has had any
trouble with recognising Brisbane as a city in Australia. I don't think
that geographic obscurity is going to be that much of a problem, and it may
even be an advantage, with Brisbane being seen as a more "exotic" location
than Sydney or the usual "world city" suspects.
Regards,
Craig F.
