I think this (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Manchester_Bolton_%26_Bury_Canal&action=edit&section=5) is still absurd. 
We should write «<ref>Priestley 1831, p. 435.</ref>», not «<ref name="Priestleyp435">{{Harvnb|Priestley|1831|p=435.}}</ref>». 
All that code only to add this quite useless link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Bolton_%26_Bury_Canal#CITEREFPriestley1831 ? :-/
