Rather than remove it, can't we just step up our highlighting of
uncited material? I, as a reader, would rather see "The late[1] John
Smith was a member of the Nazi party." with a big red underline or
something indicating that it lacks a source, than not see it at all.

[1] For living people we should still err on the side of not defaming them.
