Hi Everyone,
It's time for Wikimedia Tech Talks 2019 Episode 10! This talk will take
place 20, November, 2019 at 6PM UTC.
*Title: *Wikidata, behind the curtain
*Speaker: *Amir Sarabadani, Software developer, Wikimedia Deutschland
*Summary:*
Wikidata is a complex and large-scale project. We all know how to use it
and how to contribute to it but it's a little bit hard to understand how it
actually works, how it scales and what parts are tricky about it. To lots
of developers, it's a black box and this is not good. This talk plans to
explain internals of Wikidata to other developers and explain future
changes to Wikidata on its technical layer.
The link to the Youtube Livestream can be found here:

During the live talk, you are invited to join the discussion on IRC at
#wikimedia-office

Hello,
We have requested a 30 minutes read-only window for s1 (enwiki) (T234801)
for the 14th November from 05:00-05:30 AM UTC to switchover that section
primary database master (T234800)
db1067 is an old host and out of warranty that will be decommissioned
(T217396). The new master will be db1083
We are going to do this on Thursday 14th Nov from 05:00 to 05:30 AM UTC (we
do not expect to use the 30 minutes window, if everything goes as expected).
Impact: Writes will be blocked on the following wiki:
enwiki
Reads will remain unaffected.
Communication will happen at #wikimedia-operations
If you are around at that time and want to help with the monitoring, please
join us!
Thanks

We've reached the point in deployment of the Multi-Content Revisions
changes where we're turning off the writing of data to deprecated fields.
In particular, rev_text_id and ar_text_id will be 0 in all revisions, and
rev_content_model, rev_content_format, and corresponding fields in the
archive table will always be null.
This has been the case on testwiki since October 29, and on the remaining
group 0 wikis since a few minutes ago. Assuming no issues turn up, we plan
to roll it out to group 1 on Thursday and group 2 early next week.
If you find any MediaWiki bugs that seem as if they might be related to
this change, please file them in Phabricator and tag #Core-Platform-Team.
Thanks!

Hey,
It happens quite often that people add a temporary config variable to the
code and then mediawiki-config repo, they remove it from code and forget to
remove the config in mediawiki-config. My quick check found these config
variables to be unused:
$wgSpamBlacklistEventLogging
$wgUseContributionTracking
$wgMFLazyLoadReferences
$wgMFExperiments
$wgDepictsQualifierProperties
$wgMediaInfoEnableOtherStatements
$wgGEHelpPanelSearchEnabled
$wgDisableRollbackConfirmationFeature
$wgCirrusSearchEnableSearchLogging
Unused config variables are bad because they make our overly large config
file even bigger (IS.php is already over 20k lines) and it can be confusing
(like https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T225183). I will add more unused
config variables to the list by improving the search but please check and
remove them if you introduced any of the aforementioned variables.
Thanks
Best
