Due to a suggestion (forgot from whom, though...) the Tasks extension
can now automatically create a task for a newly created article. This
can be configured separately for article creations by logged-in users
and anons (should we allow that again).
Major advantages of this mechanism over the "new pages patrol" are
* tasks are not forgotten, even if noone checked the page for days or
month
* tasks can be closed by logged-in users, so patrols can focus on
unchecked (new) articles

P.S.: Thanks to Brion and Hashar for fixes and improvements!

Clearly people want features in the software that the developers are
too busy or unmotivated to implement. The barrier to becoming a
Mediawiki developer is high, but the barrier to creating a conditional
template is not. Authors/editors/endusers *don't need* to edit the
complex templates; they need to edit the articles, which are becoming
more and more daunting the more features are added to the syntax. If
the intermediately-skilled programmers can make editing simpler and
easier for the end users, isn't that a good thing?
Of course, the best solution would be to implement infoboxes and the
like directly in the Mediawiki software, in a way that doesn't require
end users to code anything. But until that happens, people are going
to use as many shortcuts as they can to make it easy on newcomers.

Stop being so hostile to people trying to improve the Wikipedia.
Do they unnecessarily load down the servers? Fine. Then they should
be killed, for now. (But don't call it "killing" and don't be an ass
about it.) Is the code obscene? Fine, but don't call it "obscene".
These people are just trying to help, in ways that you are unable or
unwilling to do. Be nice.
hey all,
I was wondering if there was any ready-made patches available for mediawiki requiring
registration w/named accounts before posting, as well as maybe a 'karma' feature to
rate users by the quality of their postings.
Also, is there an easy way for admins to see all changes to wikis on one page,
as well as an easy way to revert these edits?
Thanks much,
Ed
I can only support Servien's request. It'd really, really kind of you if somebody could take care of this matter pretty soon. Lots of people will surely appreciate it.
Maybe some of you speak French, German, Dutch, Japanese, Italian, Russian or Swedish as a native language. You see, if no developer had taken the time to set up new subdomains for those languages at some point in time ... there simply wouldn't be a Wikipedia in your language by now. Please think about that for a second.
Thanks for your consideration!

Tip: If you use vim put this in your .vimrc:
let php_noShortTags = 1
then <? echo "x"; ?> won't be highlighted as is the default, but the
same code with <?php will be.
