http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Developer_activity
Here is a beginning for developer bios. I just added a few names amongst
those who answered to the poll, but I hope ALL those who answered and
well as others who did not, will complete the page.
Please do not be shy and add your name and a bit about you.
This has two goals. First just to have such a page on meta will get
people to know your development activity better. Also, a new developer
might get a better idea who he can ask things to, when he is interested
in a specific task.
The second goal will be to add part of this to the WMF website. I
consequently also needs things such as your paypal address and such.
I might add that I would like very much that you add your country of
origin (and why not the languages you manage). Knowing the language you
manage may be interesting for the new developer. Knowing that developers
come from all over the world is in itself a very valuable information as
well.
So, please modify and correct what I already added, and just add
yourself if you are not yet there.
Thanks :-)
Hello,
Following my previous announcment:
http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2004-September/024942.html
The skin files got moved from /stylesheets/ to /skins/ with several sub
directories.
I consider the change complete but it needs:
_ to bug test paths changes
_ documentation (skin.doc)
This is only for HEAD (aka the future 1.4), not for 1.3.x.
cheers,

Hello, I have recently installed mediawiki 1.3 on a subdomain, plastictub.vaporslave.com, to function as a kind of collaborative, fictive encyclopedia. Installation was a breeze and everything was running exceptionally smooth until a few nights ago when page requests inexplicably started spitting out this error:
[pear_error: message="failed to open stream: Input/output error" code=0 mode=return level=notice prefix="" info=""]
I know that it might not be the most appropriate thing to do, this inserting of an off-topic query, but I'm at a loss. Can anyone share information with me that will lead to the ressurection of the site?
Any information at all would be greatly appreciated,
Tim Wilson

Some time ago, I requested to turn off the capitalisation for
nk:wiktionary. From things that I read on the en:wiktionary I was led to
believe that for a sysop it is an easy little time consuming
manipulation. The big thing is to get things right afterward.
Can someone please turn the capitalisation off. The longer the wait the
more there is to fix.
Thanks,
GerardM
Hello,
The future wikimedia website may be found here :
http://wikimedia.org/wiki/Home
For it to become truely our site, it needs input from
editors. You may find here
(http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_website)
some ideas about we would like it to become and why.
You are welcome to help adding content in it. For
this, you need to ask for an account. Please do so to
Angela or I.
Mostly, to be functionnal, the website needs technical
help. An irc occured a while ago on the topic. The
link is here :
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Foundation_website_meeting%2C_July_2004
In this discussion, it was concluded that there were a
bunch of things to fix, such as html handling,
different skin for loggued-in users and non loggued-in
users, languages...
The current situation in any cases is that
* We cannot host the fundraising page
* We cannot easily handle multilingualism
The first point makes it impossible for the website to
just exist.
The second is just a knife cut in our attempt to make
this site multilingue.
Is there anyone interested to help about this ?
If yes, when and for what ?
Is there any hope that anything is done in the next 6
months ?
I am ready to participate to the content, but since I
would prefer to write in french and am basically the
only one participating on it, is it a problem that the
foundation website is in french ?
Also, is it okay to everyone that I change the current
fundraising page ? There is outdated information on
it, and I would like that translations are included as
well.

(I have to admit that I am completely new to this project)
What I would like to do is to start a complete new skin.
>From what I could read here so far, is that there a the css files
and an XHTML file directing the structure.
Well I have downloaded the sources for 1.3.2 and unfortunately,
there exists no /skin/ directory, nor do I have any php file for the
existing skins.
It would be great if you could guide me, so that I can really start
working...
I have taken a look at the css files. (in particular the cologneblue.css)
Is there any reason why pt (points) is used as the size unit instead of em
or percentages which are relative ?
(IMHO one should try to use relative sizes whereever possible)
Thanks,
Matthias

There is a need for using XML with wiktionary.
The definitions of a word in wiktionary, can be structured in a fixed
way. For each word/phrase you have a:
*Indication what language it is in
*Name of the word/phrase
*Definition of the word/phrase
*Translations
*Pronounciation
*Synonyms
*Antonyms etc
I do not try to be complete here, but my point is, the data is
structured. Other organisations that work with words already structure
their data using XML for instance GEMET. When Wiktionary is structured
exlicitly, the result will be that the import and export from Wiktionary
becomes possible and it will become possible for other dictionary/
glossary project to get a changed content in XML format that is specific
for working with words. This will enhance the importance of wiktionary
and it will help achieve out aim which is open accessible dictionary
content.
The flip side of the coin is that we can get {changed) content from
other dictionary/ glossary projects for inclusion in wiktionary.
The GEMET data is available as XML data and, it would be great to import
it straight in from XML.
*Issues:
#Using XML standards for dictionary content.
#Importing data / Exporting data using the current wiktionary content.
#Structuring wiktionary using MySQL tables.
#Importing data / Exporting data using the future wiktionary structure.
NB I have posted this on META as well
Thanks,
GerardM
Hello,
As part of the documentation of mediawiki, I am willing to document the
code. I am testing phpdocumentator ( http://www.phpdoc.org/ ).
It works by using comments in the code that looks like:
/**
* Method to return an articleID
* @private
*/
function getArticleID () {
...
}
You can get an output example at :
http://www.twenkill.net/mwdoc/
(site available only when I am online).
Are we willing to flood our code with such comments ? I personally think
it will help new developpers to come help us and let older developpers
to better understand the whole software.
cheers,
