Chris, that's a good point: it does LOOK as if running free software is
some sort of disadvantage.
Please suggest an alternative phrasing which
* explains succintly why all our software is "free", and
* explains why this is an advantage
Feel free to take more than 16 words to do this. ^_^

I think the sense is : exclusively with free software

Why does http://wikimediafoundation.org/fundraising say "With just two
servers, donated by Wikimedia founder Jimbo Wales and powered only by
free software", as if running free software is some sort of
disadvantage?

Hi,
it seems that something with the server is broken.
When invoking http://de.wikipedia.org/ I get a 403 error from Apache,
the same with fr.wikipedia.org.
Opening the English Wikipedia results in a lot of PHP errors:
*>Warning*: session_start():

Maybe this has something to do with a German radio report about
Wikipedia? Or are these just the "normal" server problems?

As an software professional I recommend postponing the press release
until:
* the 'upgrade' has been fully tested
* the developers and users are equally impressed with its speed and
reliability
Often new hardware or software works great for a few days before the
first glitch appears. Microsoft is famous (notorious?) for the "Service
Pack 3" phenomenon: they've gotten the reputation that no new software
version is considered reliable until the 3rd "service pack" (i.e., set
of bug fixes) is delivered to customers.
Now our tiny gang of volunteer developers may be more dedicated and
selfless than Microsoft's salaried horde -- but "rush to market" tends
to cause errors. So, I think we should wait a bit.

Thanks Brion! That was a super fast response.

Given our current hardware difficulties, I think it was a great idea to add a
prominent donation notice to each page. But clicking on the "Projects" link
on the Wikimedia Foundation donations page takes me to the English Wikipedia.
We have more projects than that, no? :)

Does anyone know how long it will be before larousse comes back online?
Is it worth getting file uploads working on pliny? Is it just a matter
of re-enabling them in PHP, and then resynchronising the files after
larousse comes back on?
