Thank you for your feedback, Sebastian.

Only the most recent links to section titles have been indexed so far. We are looking into indexing older versions of talk page to support this in the future.

Just so you know, this only applies to the topic links. As you noticed, comments permalinks work for any comment, no matter the date of publication.

As I had a few questions off-list and on wiki regarding missing comments, I take the opportunity of this message to share my checklist for faulty comments:
  • if the signature or the timestamp was altered
    • some users might have changed their username. This change is also done on the permalinks database. But the change is not done on wiki's talk pages, for instance when the permalink was used to create an internal link.
  • if the user part of the signature matches the minimum requirements (link to user page, user talk page, or user contributions
    • I saw a case where the user signature was linking only to a user namespace subpage
  • if the timestamp is standard compared to the other comments.
    • I saw a case where a user signed with their username only (like a ~~~ signature, with no timestamp), or they have what seems to be a signature made of subst-ed templates.
Please let me know if you find any comment that should have worked but hasn't.

Hope this helps
Benoît

That's really neat.

I did come across a couple of instances where it didn't work. E.g. https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bybrunnen#Testa_Wikispeech should go to https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bybrunnen/Arkiv_2021-06#c-Sebastian_Berlin_(WMSE)-2021-06-03T09:26:00.000Z-Testa_Wikispeech. I get an error message saying "This topic could not be found. It might have been deleted or moved.". It does work for https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bybrunnen#Personnamn.

Hello

Starting on Monday, a change will be visible on talk pages or pages where discussions happen: the Editing team will deploy talk page permalinks.

In short, any comment posted on a talk page will get a unique identifier, the permalink, stored in a database. It will make it possible to find a comment, even if it was moved elsewhere.

The main visible changes are:
  • The timestamp becomes a link. You get the permalink by clicking or taping on the timestamp attached to the comment.
  • If you click on any link to a comment, and this comment was moved elsewhere (for instance for achieving), you get a message with a link to the comment
  • When you are directed to a given comment, this cimment is highlighted, and the URL contains the unique ID for this message.
You can learn more about how this feature works at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:DiscussionTools#Talk_pages_permalinking

All comments, even the older ones, will get a permalink, as far as they have a proper signature.

This change will not be available on English Wikipedia for the moment, as the database is not filled yet.
It is available on Desktop and Mobile view, but not on the iOS and Android apps.
It will not affect talk pages using StructuredDiscussions/Flow and LiquidThreads.

This change will be publicized in Tech News and on the Diff. Please share it with your community!

All the best,
Benoît
