Thanks much Yuvi. Great work. Looking forward for more hacks. I would post
about this in Wikitech list and ask for suggestions / using the extension
across Indic / non latin wikimedia projects. Probably we can rename as
TidyURL since its not really short and short is not we care about, tidy is
important(its a nice to have). Some more support for using the extension on
all projects will do good in seeing this in real :)

Looking forward to hear more such success stories from other languages.
Congrats to Tamil Wikipedians for the efforts. What is more exciting is that
this leap was mostly organic growth.

Now that is *really quick*. It would definitely be useful for not just
wikipedia, any non latin mediawiki can use this. There was a request on tamil
wikipedia for tamil wikinews as well. I think polishing this and making it
available on all non latin wiki will help :)
> Feedback welcome :)
>
Feedback from mediawiki extn perspective : Options to set the "ShortURL" to
be displayed on client side will help. For instance I could install this on
mediawiki server, but for shortname sake I may still want the short domain
name to be used (I might use mod_rewrite in the short domain). Also base 36
will not be able to cater larger wiki's like en.wiki. This should be made
configurable. Probably the simplest way to display in client side is to add
a line to Toolbox page. (This will make it "standardized") and also makes it
load faster since there wont be an additional js download and will work even
when non js browsers. ( #facepalm to me for having spent a long time trying
to bring it on right spot on the UI [and still its buggy on FA pages])
Please post to Wikitech-I to get more technical feedback :)

Welcome to Mediawiki. We need more love from geeks like you :) especially
for a lot of indic solutions. Feel free to mail this list with any ideas you
may have.

Hi all,
Happy to announce that Short URLs are now available in every page of Tamil
Wikipedia. Sharing Indic URLs with unicode characters are never fun since
one will get an ugly looking URL like
http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%95%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%95%…
.
(Forget about twitter, even mails are tough). Now its easier
http://tawp.in/r/262 !! The short url is visible on top right of every page,
extreme right of the article title. For the technically inclined, the
shortening happens by encoding the page id of a mediawiki page to base36 (No
database for shorturls here!) and hence doesnt depend on any other server.
I would like to thank User:Mountain[1] for the shortify project[2] which
powers this. (Gerard, this is already localized in tamil, malayalam :) ). It
would be great if this could be "extensionized" in mediawiki as its a
feature must for wiki's running in non latin languages.I would also like to
thank YuviPanda for setting this up on his server and doing some
customization for Tamil wiki. (YuviPanda is an ubergeek looking to do some
serious work for mediawiki in GSoC), Kishore for some quick css help in
making this happen.
It would be great if this can be supported by Wikimedia itself. Even if the
fancy twitter friendly short domain name is not there,if just the
redirection part is hosted for all projects on wikimedia servers(existing
domain names will do), it will be of great use, especially for non latin
languages.
I understand Malayalam wikipedia has a redirect mechanism based on the
english interwiki title for sometime now.Even we would want to do this, but
am thinking if redirects are an optimal, search engine friendly solution or
are there better ways of doing it.Can someone please educate me. Also IMHO
URLs with transliterated text will help Indic languages. But making them
search friendly is a key thing and if we could do this, am sure the
readership would bound to increase a few times.(Not everyone knows to type
in regional language and many use transliterated text for search and then
consume vernacular content). Wikipedia is missing them!

A preliminary update about the Carte Blanche event:
1. Feb 5:
I delivered the inaugural address as chief guest. I spoke about what all
constitute free software and content, why anyone should care (more in the
context of underserved needs of groups of people without market strengths and
fragmented markets like Indic users), and how all one can contribute. I pointed
at the "non-mainstream" projects which are relatively small and needing
contributors as opposed to well-known projects like GNU and Linux.
2. Feb 6:
There was a stall for Wikipedia and one for Wikibhasha. Surya Prakash mainly
volunteered at the Wikipedia stall and Mahir and others helped with the
logistics. Saravanan from Microsoft Research helped with both the stalls.
We had workshops in the afternoon with a very good infrastructure provided by
MIT. However, attendance at the workshops were not as good as for the stalls
(perhaps due to the OS workshop that ran in parallel). Tamil Wikians Surya
Prakash, Manian, Sengai Podhuvan, Mahir, and Paridhimathi and I spoke as well as
provided hands-on tutorials to the participants. Almost all participants created
accounts and made their first few edits there. One ILUG member invited us to
post projects for FOSS enthusiasts
at http://wiki.ilugc.in/index.php?title=Projects_List. Saravanan demoed a
special (yet-to-be released) version of WikiBhasha for Tamil and took our
feedback.

Special thanks to go to Srikanth for connecting us with the organisers and
making all this possible. Thanks to Tinu who drove to deliver the wiki banners
to me.
I request the other volunteers to add further information on this thread.
