I do love to share, "Where and how else can your voice be heard thousands of times round the world by different people?". I then show them few audio files I uploaded and placed as an audio pronunciation to the relevant articles, and show them the Page view statistics of that particular file. And believe me, collectively numbers are huge. Also I show them "Page view stats" of any of the images I uploaded on commons. This really works sometimes, it encourages participants to at least try out by doing simple yet effective tasks and shows them that its not even that difficult to contribute.

While doing wikipedia/osm workshops, I make it a point to start with the "Why am I doing this and what do I gain by being here" section. This lets everyone understand what the open movement and community is about, and what I personally gained/gain by being a part of it. After this, I let everyone know that those who would like personal attention and help can move to the front so that its easy for me to attend to them.

Personally, this has worked very well and also made people more interactive rather than become a classroom type session.
