People like myself who mostly edit English Wiikipedia but would like to attend such conferences. we  don't even come to know about it or even where / when it is being held.

Is there a link page to what happened / outcomes / resolutions / list of partcipants / photos etc. ?

Subhashish,

While I understand that you haven't played any role in organizing the conference and you may not be attending, it is essential to recognize that transparency and open communication are key to maintaining trust within the community. Intentionally hiding information can often lead to corruption, which is why concerns raised by reputed community members should not be dismissed as petty.

Although safe spaces and controlled entry are important, it should not come at the cost of transparency. Striking a balance between safety and openness is crucial. It is the responsibility of event organizers to keep the community informed and involved in the process.

Given the current circumstances, it seems that the Wikimedia Foundation has potentially hijacked the Wiki Conference India to advance their own agenda without actively maintaining transparency. As community members, we should be concerned about this apparent lack of openness, as it could undermine the very principles upon which the Wikimedia movement is founded.

We must remember that the lack of transparency surrounding this particular Wiki Conference could enable the Wikimedia Foundation to use it as an opportunity to present certain proposals and collect selective feedback. This would be a highly questionable practice, given that the WMF should not make any decisions or collect selective feedback during this event and then present it as broader community feedback. Such actions would be misleading and could be considered a corrupt practice.

As community members, we must hold the WMF and event organizers accountable for ensuring that the conference reflects the values of transparency, inclusiveness, and open collaboration that are fundamental to the Wikimedia movement. By doing so, we can prevent the possibility of the WMF using this event as a platform to push through decisions or collect selective feedback without properly involving the broader community.

I'm not bring able to attend or haven't been played any role in organising, but petty accusation based on no real substance, that to from two members of the community with long experience, reflects 0% assumptions of any good faith. This  would hurt the community spirit. Why page not updated considered secrecy? Why questions framed for fellow volunteers so sensational. We all at some point found things missing and have added a word in random pages. I don't know most of the people organising the event but many new community members are able to bring together the larger Indian community after long, especially when the risks of the pandemic are less.

Registration-based entry is not secrecy. Walk-in is not openness. Safe spaces are always created by building a layer or controlled and vetted entry. We all saw what kind of interesting events happened in Mumbai back in 2011. Wikimedians and their physical safety are much more important that an abstract, self-professed version of openness.

WOW!!

I completely agree with Pavanja !!

Looks like this conference is some kind of secret mission!!

There is hardly any activity about it on the mailing list or even on wiki.

For no reason, secrecy is seen everywhere eg. Check the team page.

Asaf says, ad hoc attendance is discouraged. But without any disclosure of the venue, such attendance is not going to happen at all !!

Where is the openness and trust that exist on Wikipedia reflected in the conference??

Or possibly that 90+ lakhs budget amount is to be spent secretly !!

Ironically the theme of the conference is "Strengthening bonds" !! Looks like there are very secret bonds to be developed there !!

Anyways, all the best wishes to the conference!!

Well, I was thinking of sending some press release to the media. Nothing available about it on the conference website.

Hi, Pavanaja.

As the conference FAQ page[1] mentions, there will be no streaming, and walk-in ad hoc attendance is discouraged.

Folks who have registered have received all the information.

As for documentation by participants, I'm sure that will begin to show up once the conference proper begins (tomorrow morning).

Namaste,

Wkiconference India 2023 starts tomorrow. The home page is here - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_India_2023

I have many questions –

  • Where the event is happening?
  • If someone just wants to walk-in, where he/she should go?
  • Sessions are listed. But no details. There could have been link to the submissions so that we can know what are the details
  • No mention of links to online streaming. No live streaming?

I just observed something peculiar about this event. Most details, for ex., venue, are kept as secret. What is the necessity to do so? When I travel to such events, I start posting in social media (FB, Insta, Twitter, Whatsapp status) about the event, start posting photos from airport itself till end of event. So far I did not see a single post about the event, the venue, the goodies, the sessions, etc. What’s going on? Whether the organisers have put a ban on such activities? If that is the case, then it is totally against the philosophy of free knowledge and open society.

I am just wondering. I am sure many more also will be wondering.

Thanks and regards,

Pavanaja
