Hi Joe and team,

FWIW - just wanted to share an observation made recently. I am active on the English wikipedia mainly but I recently went out to do a workshop that made use of the Hindi wikipedia and it was an eye-opener. Turned out that Wikimedia Commons is impossible to use if one does not know English - because most Indian language localizations there are incomplete and inadequate - even the license dropdown fails to work which would lead to assured deletion of any uploads. Another interesting thing was that many people know English and use it on their mobiles for searches. I am not sure if one of the ideas that Malayalam wikipedians use -maintaining English language redirects to Malayalam-titled articles has a benefit in this case. Might be worth examining search strategies used across the country.

Hey everyone,

Wanted to provide an update on the upcoming Wikimedia Foundation’s New Readers research in India.

We have taken feedback from a few folks, and enjoyed a good chat with Yohann Thomas on priority research needs.

Reflecting these, we will be in India from June 13 to 27. The research will focus on:

  • Urban, semi-urban, and rural internet users

  • in Hindi, Tamil, and English languages

  • From education, technology, and rural industry backgrounds

  • Around the Delhi (including nearby Noida and Gurgaon) and Chennai areas

We're really looking forward to visiting India and learning more about the many different kinds of internet users there, and of course, to potentially meeting some of you during our travels! If you are in or around Delhi / Chennai, please email me so we can connect.

Warmly,
Joe Sutherland
