For your information: I've used SCIM for typing in Tamil and currently use IBUS. Both work very well for typing in Tamil.

They support various key mappings for each language. I think they're available for most of the languages.

I blogged about the Indic Online Keyboard; http://ultimategerardm.blogspot.com/2010/06/linux-provides-input-methods-for.html it supports many Indic scripts. I do not know if you know it and I do not know its quality.

What I do know is that it is open source and free. Is someone interested in looking into this tool and write a review. I am quite happy to host you as a guest blogger. I am also happy to blog and refer to another blog.
