By accepting defeat we don't go anywhere.
WCI Chandigarh was a great affair, and I'm sure that the organisers are a wiser lot now.

But, if that experience tells us that we are incapable, then this is our fault of looking at it. We need to learn and grow rather than get discouraged. Let's count positives and get motivated. Let's look at negatives and learn.

Accepting defeat must never be an option.

My view:
I was there for half a day only, but that half day has changed me a lot. From my limited knowledge of half day presence and mails etc., I realise that 100% volunteer based arrangement is difficult. I agree with this observation shared earlier in this mail thread.

So, what we need is a volunteer management team, but further work outsourced to professionals.

For example- imagine if preparing food was also done by wikipedians, what do you imagine would have been the scene? This activity was outsourced to professionals and supervised by wikipedians, so this was excellent. We should extend this working style to other items also like stay arrangements, logistics etc.

I strongly believe if we have the will power, a positive attitude, wci2016 must have given the organisers enough experience and learnings that they can pull another grand show very successfully.

I suggest we start with WCI 2017, 18 and 19. After arranging 4 events, I bet that arranging Wikimania in 2020 will be a child's play.

Stay positive, Cheers!!!

Regards,
Manoj.

Right.
But we have plenty of editors only who might not prove to be good event managees. In such a case what is the scope for outsourcing this activity and hiring professional event managers?

Hi,

Usually, wikipedians start off with great enthusiasm but then get disoriented and off target quickly. Volunteers could be great editors but creating a conference requires altogether different skills. Doing some activitiy online and running a conference or even an organisation is a completely different ball game. Once we understand this fact, we will be ready to conduct any kind of conferences-online or realworld !!

Hi,

I also thought that we should organize Wikimania in India but after organizing WCI i see that Indian community is not yet ready to even organize an annual WCI. It took one year to organize WCI 2016 and the work has not finished yet 3 months after the conference. It will take another 2 months to finish everything as far as i see.

So, No Wikimania until we are prepared enough to organize an annual conference.

Hi,

We organized the 2015 BN10 Conference in Kolkata and as far as I know,
Bengali community, including myself, is not at all interested in organizing
another conference, although I dont speak on behalf of all. Personally
speaking, to remain active online is more fruitful than organizing a
Wikimania.
