Dear Wikimedians,
Here is the monthly report of Wikimedia Argentina for August 2013.
You can read the full report (in Spanish and English) here:

2. New website for Wikimedia Argentina
3. Conferences about Digitization Project
4. Creative Commons Global Summit
5. Literary contests in Buenos Aires Province
6. Conference at the National University of Córdoba
== Wikimania 2013 ==
As in previous editions, we took part at the international summit that
unites Wikimedians all over the world. This 2013 edition witnessed the
record of Argentinian participants, with 10 representatives, the largest
number ever to attend a Wikimania (not counting the 2009 edition, held in
Buenos Aires). Wikimedia Argentina supported the participation of 3 members
of the association.
The topics addressed in the different presentations run through the most
important topics of the movement, including for example the Wikimedia
Foundation's strategy for developing countries, activities from local
chapters all over the world, and the road ahead for the movement in the
following years. Some technical breakthroughs were also addressed, like the
visual editor project from the Editor Engagement Team.
Wikimedia Argentina participated in several activities with other Ibero
American groups, as part of the Iberocoop initiative. Some opportunities
for cooperation were drafted and will be developed further in the summit to
be held in Mexico City next October. Wikimedia Argentina participated with
other Iberocoop members in a small stand at the Chapters Village and also
gave a presentation about the Mujeres Iberoamericanas contest.
== New website for Wikimedia Argentina ==
After a month's work, we launched our new website, with a strong graphic
identity and new sections. This new platform has a special section for the
organization's events, including them in a calendar and tools to share them
more easily, engaging better with our members and volunteers.
A header highlights the most important news, and the projects we develop
are more visible now as well. We hope that this new platform allows a
better communication with our members (also, allowing them to promote their
own projects and activities, as long as they are in line with the
organization's goals) and with the general public that approaches Wikimedia
Argentina for more information.
The new website is available on http://www.wikimedia.org.ar
== Conferences about Digitization Project ==
On Tuesday, August 20th, Wikimedia Argentina made a presentation at the
Faculty of Arts at the University of Buenos Aires about the digitalization
program based on do-it-yourself scanners that our Association has conducted
with other institutions in the past year. Daniel Reetz, creator of the DIY
Book Scanner Project, shared his experience and discussed the relationship
between digitization, public domain and new technologies. On Thursday
August 22, Reetz made a presentation at the Creative Commons Global Summit
and the next day held a similar talk on the Library of the Faculty of
Humanities and Education (FaHCE) of the National University of La Plata.
In the past year, Wikimedia Argentina has supported digitization of
academic and historical material possessed by various Argentine
institutions and has promoted their upload to Wikimedia Commons and
Wikisource. While the Faculty of Arts of the UBA has used its own scanner,
FaHCE Library has a scanner built by Wikimedia Argentina and delivered on a
free loan. The DIY scanners are devices easily put together with
prefabricated parts that allows anyone to scan books and documents at a low
cost. To date, 71 documents have been digitized and uploaded to Wikimedia
Commons for free use by these and other institutions (see
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Files_scanned_with_collaboratio…
).
== Creative Commons Global Summit ==
The Creative Commons Global Summit was held this year in Argentina and was
organized jointly by Wikimedia Argentina and Fundación Vía Libre (who
together represent Creative Commons in the country). It was the first
edition of this conference on a Spanish-speaking country. The summit
brought together the Creative Commons affiliates from around the world
along with the CC board members, their staff, colleagues, representatives
and others interested in the present and future of free culture.
Participants discussed strategies for strengthening Creative Commons and
its global community and made several presentations on the latest
developments in the global movement, while many volunteers had the
opportunity to expose local and international projects using Creative
Commons licenses. Between August 21 and 24, more than 300 people
participated at the San Martin Cultural Center, the main venue of the
conference.
On Friday August 23, the most anticipated events of the summit took place:
the presentation of Lawrence Lessig, who drew attention to the copyright
license limitations currently taking place in creative processes. Lessig
also raised questions and key issues of the debate on copyright and
outreach, and proposed key aspects to be considered in proposals for
copyright reform. A summary of this presentation is available on our
website (in Spanish at
http://www.wikimedia.org.ar/2013/08/28/leyes-que-ahogan-la-creatividad-repa…
)
== Literary contests in Buenos Aires Province ==
Wikimedia Argentina is supporting a series of literary contests organized
by the Direction of Libraries and Reading Promotion of the Buenos Aires
Province. These contests consist of the 3rd. "Arturo Jauretche" National
Essay Contest, the 3rd. "Enrique Santos Discépolo" National Drama Contest
and the VII "Haroldo Conti" National Contest for Young Story-tellers. Works
can be submitted from July 18th to October 18th.
The winners will not only have a prize money: the 15 best works will be
published in a collection whose digital edition will also be uploaded to
Wikimedia Commons and Spanish Wikisource. Rules are available on our
website (in Spanish at
http://www.wikimedia.org.ar/2013/08/20/participa-de-los-concursos-literario…
).
Support for these contests is given in the framework of the cooperation
agreement signed between Wikimedia Argentina and the Cultural Institute of
the Buenos Aires Province.
== Conference at the National University of Córdoba ==
As part of our collaboration agreement with the National University of
Córdooba, on Thursday August 29th, the conference "Free licences and access
to knowledge at the university" was presented by Evelin Heidel and Beatriz
Busaniche, members of Wikimedia Argentina. The summit was organized by the
Education Technology Area of the institution and the local chapter.

Hi All,
I would like to direct your attention to a new blog
post<https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/09/03/wikimedia-privacy-policy-community-in…>on
the Wikimedia Blog, requesting input from community members (like
you!)
on the drafts of the new Privacy Policy and the new Access to Nonpublic
Information Policy.
In June, we asked you for initial input about what we could do to improve
our current privacy policy and what you would like to see in a new privacy
policy. Today, we ask for your help again. Based on your initial input
and that of a number of Wikimedia Foundation teams, we have crafted our
first attempt at these new policies. But they cannot and will not be
complete with your feedback.
We ask you to read the blog
post<https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/09/03/wikimedia-privacy-policy-community-in…>
for
more details and encourage you to participate in these important

Program activities Community
A Wikipedia editing training session took place on 20 July in Monmouth. The
office received feedback from one local attendee that the training was
excellent, attendees went away very happy and that "all of the Wikimedia
volunteers were fantastic!" Eight people attended (including three women),
all newcomers to Wikipedia editing, attended. A good understanding of how
Wikipedia works and the rules around notability and referencing was
achieved. All users went away confident in making basic edits to articles
and were enthusiastic to be involved. You can see more details of the event
on the event page<https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Monmouth_Wikipedia_training>
.
Education activities EduWiki
Work progresses on delivering the Wikimedia UK's flagship education
conference, EduWiki
2013<https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/EduWiki_Conference_2013> (1-2
November 2013, Cardiff). Registration opens soon, and we are already
looking for volunteers for various support roles. If you are interested do
get in touch with the Education Organiser Toni Sant - toni.sant[image: at]

Y Coleg Cymraeg
The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol <http://www.colegcymraeg.ac.uk/en/> (the
federal Welsh College) is a national body which plays a key role in
planning, supporting and developing Welsh medium education and scholarship
at universities in Wales. Wikimedia UK has initiated discussion regarding
open content.
European young researchers network Wikipedia workshop
Sphingonet a European network of PhD-candidate and post-doc researchers
focusing on Sphingolipids. Part of their activities is outreach work and so
we organised a workshop<https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/European_young_researchers_network_Wikipedia_…>
on
how Wikipedia works, and how to improve it with the attendees' specific
knowledge. The people on the network came from 10-12 different countries
(UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland). The goal of this event
was to make a significant contribution to the quality of Wikipedia
scientific content in Sphingonet-‐related topics.
Luc Henry, the organiser from the network, reflected:
"The workshop was exactly what we expected. We found a team of extremely
motivated and talented editors willing to freely share their time and
knowledge to improve Wikipedia. As most of the participants were beginners,
the basics of the language and inner workings were covered first, but the
aim was that each participant would create or significantly improve one
article. In order to be more productive, a draft article was prepared in
advance so that we could focus on the technicalities during the afternoon.
The five hours of the workshop were just sufficient to cover some
background and technical information and learn enough to achieve the task.
The feedback from the participants was unanimously positive and the comment
that was heard the most was that people found it very useful to get
started, overcoming their apprehension to modify anything found in the
encyclopedia. A majority of people also found it very likely that they
would continue editing Wikipedia articles now that they had a basic
training, something they would not have done on their own."
GLAM activities Open Culture 2013
The Collections Trust very kindly gave us a free stand at their exhibition
on the 2nd/3rd of July 2013. This was a great opportunity for us to talk to
attendees at OpenCulture2013 <https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/OpenCulture2013>,
people who are committed to the idea of free culture, but who may need
information on what Wikipedia can do with mass releases of images. Or
indeed just show them how to edit an article or add an image to an article.
In actuality it gave us the opportunity to talk to a range of museum
professionals, from those who weren't sure if we'd be interested in their
little museum, to those who only see us as a threat to their sale of
images; and we did get to show one curator how to upload images.
Welsh Books Council
The Welsh Books Council
<http://www.cllc.org.uk/hafan-home?diablo.lang=eng> agreed
to Wikimedia UK's Manager in Wales' request to upload all their Welsh book
reviews (3249 articles) onto Wicipedia Cymraeg.
Technology Other activities Wiki Loves Monuments
The third planning meeting for Wiki Loves Monuments in the UK took place in
July. Volunteers have been adding lists on Wikipedia, with lots of help
from editors, resulting in a strong collaborative effort. At the same time,
the organisers are setting up a website and arranging events such as photo
walks, and looking for partners. The competition takes place in September,
and if you are interested in helping out or participating, please leave a
message on Commons<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_the…>
where
efforts are being co-ordinated.

Communications
Please see the above links to relevant press coverage received in July. In
other top line communications news, Stevie visited journalists from some of
the national newspapers to build relationships and keep them up to date
with potential stories, including Wikimania 2014 and Wiki Loves Monuments.
He also spent some time meeting academics and learning more about the way
they use Wikipedia in their university courses. These form the basis of
some potential case studies and will be useful in the lead up to the
EduWiki conference. The annual review was successfully printed in Hong Kong
for sharing at Wikimania 2013 which was a great relief. Rock drum visited
the office for a few days to make a short film for Wikimania 2014 and did
an excellent job. Planning began for a key messages workshop offered to the
charity for free by a volunteer.

COMMUNITY: supporting and mobilising volunteers and editors
Wikipedia Café.
WMNL revived an old tradition: the Wikipedia Café, an informal pub meeting
of Wikipedians living in a specific area. On July 2 a Wikipedia Café was
held in The Hague, with eleven wikipedians attending. The next one is
scheduled in Amsterdam
WORK: content, collaboration and activity development
Editathon classics
As part of a Summerschool organised by the departments of classical studies
of the Amsterdam Universities, WMNL organised an editathon focussing on
translation of Latin inscriptions of monumental graves. Seven participants
produced Wikipedia articles and added information to Wikisource.
Wikipedians in Residence
The Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB, national library of the Netherlands) and
the Nationaal Archief (NA, national archives of the Netherlands) are aiming
to put the largest and most diverse collection of textual heritage in the
Netherlands at the service of Wikipedia and related Wiki-projects. To
support this ambition, both institutions have attracted the experienced
Wikipedian Hay Kranen as their Wikipedian in Residence. He will act as the
linking pin between the rich (paper and digital) collections of the KB and
NA and the reuse of this content on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and
Wikisource.
12 Dutch scientific libraries have joined forces to hire 2 Wikipedians in
Residence that will support them for a year, starting in October 2013.
A fourth position for a Dutch Wikipedian in Residence is in preparation,
more information about this position will surface soon.
Wiki loves libraries
Preparations have been made to revitalise the project Wiki Loves Libraries.
A first brainstorm with BiSC, the service bureau for libraries in the
province of Utrecht, will take place in September.
Wiki Loves Monuments
Work kicked off in earnest in preparation for Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.
This year, there will be a special focus on the city The Hague, where we
will organise a photography workshop and an editathon. The team is
supported by Kathinka, an intern at the WMNL office.
