Hello!
I’m Brian, the organizer of the Wikipedia Day Chicago 2019
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Wikipedia_Day_2019_Chicago>
event. Thank you so much to many of you for coming out to celebrate
Wikipedia’s 18th birthday in such cold weather. It was great to meet so
many new people and see some returning faces as well. Our food costs were
funded by a Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grant. You can see the grant
proposal here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Wikipedia_Day_Chicago_2019>
.
*Contact information*
I’ve attached the introductory presentation. I’ll also provide ways to
join/contact our user group and its affiliated Chicago projects here:
- Page on meta-wiki:

The meta-wiki page is where you can find the most details about our user
group (who we are, what we do, etc.)

*Getting started as an editor…*
…and other projects mentioned in today's presentations. Zach talked about
the Wiki Education Foundation training module as particularly useful for
getting started for editing Wikipedia. Here it is:
https://dashboard.wikiedu.org/training.
Looking for editing ideas? Women in Red
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Red> was mentioned as one of the
initiatives aimed at increasing the representation of women on Wikipedia.
This is their redlist index
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Redlist_index>,
a list of articles that have not been written but may qualify for inclusion
on Wikipedia.
*Upcoming events*
Events are a great way to learn how to edit Wikipedia and meet like-minded
people. Art + Feminism is hosting an event at the Glass Curtain
Gallery on *Friday,
February 15* from 12–3pm! See the webpage
<https://www.artdesignchicago.org/events/art-feminism-wikipedia-edit-a-thon>
for more details.
You can also propose event ideas that you think our user group should host
in the future. Some ideas floating around include a Chicago history-focused
edit-a-thon. I'm considering a Public Domain Day
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Domain_Day#2019>-themed edit-a-thon
at the University of Chicago for around May.
Finally, this mailing list is our mailing list—the mailing list anyone can
edit! Everyone should feel free to contribute, telling us about relevant
events, anything related to Wikipedia or Chicago that you think might
pertain to our project, or to ask questions.
All the best,
Brian Choo
