Dear Wikimedians,
The Annual Affiliates Report for Algerian Wikimedians User Group (*WikiDZ*),
covering the period from November 1, 2020, to November 1, 2021, is
available on Meta.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Algeria/Gestion/Reports/Repport20…
Many highlights include:
During this year from November 2019 to November 2020, WikiDz was approved
his Charter and in the process of drafting its Internal regulations: a step
towards the final bylaws to fully consolidate the governance of the group.
As stated in the charter, with full accordance with local laws.
Many activities were successfully carried out and we are proud to be the
first with local expertise to have realized a totally online conference for
the Arab community with more than 70 presentation proposals for 3 days.
To have offered an artistic work for the promotion of Knowledge which is a
song on Wikipedia that has collected almost 100000 views.
We've a very rich region that leads us as a group to collaborate with
several entities in the Arab world - the African and European region is to
remain the most stable group in the region that helps other groups to
emerge.
Our totally autonomous education program that continues to train to
discover Wikipedia in Algerian universities.
The pandemic has brought out all our energy and this is the best year for
WikiDZ.
The activities we didn't achieve will in most cases have to be postponed to
the next year if they are of value, especially the internal rules and the
creation of the association at the local level.
We would like to thank the WMF for its support and its indefectible trust
in our activities. Without it, many events could not have been held.
You can read all the details below and you can tell us more about your
remarks for continuous improvement.
Bests regards

Hello friends,
The Education team[1] at the Wikimedia Foundation is happy to share a
survey aiming to investigate academic faculty’s perceptions of Wikipedia in
Higher Education. You are kindly invited to participate in this survey. We
appreciate your participation. And you are also very welcome to share this
survey with your networks.
The goal of this survey is (1) to retrieve a demographic observation about
the academic faculty’s perception of Wikipedia in Higher Education, (2) to
understand the factors that contribute to the perception of the academic
faculty towards Wikipedia, and (3) with the findings analyzed, develop
supportive programming.
Please click the link below to participate in this survey.

Today 8 March, on International Women’s Day, Wikimedia Sverige and the
Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs are pleased to welcome you to
participate in WikiGap Challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge>. This is the online
competition where volunteers around the world work hard to create, improve
and translate biographic articles on women. The Challenge will last 8 March
to 8 May.
The WikiGap <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap> campaign is more than
just an event: it has grown to be a movement in itself, building on the
same values as other gender equality projects in the Wikimedia Movement,
such as Women in red
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red>.
Four out of five biographies on Wikipedia portray men. At the same time,
women, transgendered and non-binary people make up more than half of the
population. As a movement, we need to do more to make sure that the gender
gap on Wikipedia is closed.
This year, we have a special focus on climate change and environment, where
you can earn extra points for writing articles about women trying to help
solve the climate crisis. Read, translate and improve the women on this list
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/List>. More names will
be added to the list throughout the campaign.
We also encourage you to pay special attention to Ukraine’s Cultural
Diplomacy Month
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ukraine%27s_Cultural_Diplomacy_Month_2022>
and write articles about women connected to this theme. It is extra
important in times like this.
More than 60,000 articles have been created or improved over the years, but
there’s more work that needs to be done. Therefore, we encourage you to
participate in the Challenge. Sign up and read more about the details on
the Meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Participants>.
See you in the WikiGap Challenge 2022!

Dear Wikimedians,
Greetings of the day!
CIS-A2K is glad to share this update with you. We have started developing
partnerships with various institutions in the North East region of India
since 2019. We conceptualised the GLAM project with an organization
named *Research
Institute of World's Ancient Traditions, Cultures and Heritage* (RIWATCH),
a non-profit research and community based organisation in Arunachal Pradesh
during the year 2020 and proposed it in our 2020-21 plan. But due to the
pandemic, the process was delayed. We have launched a GLAM-Wiki project
with RIWATCH from March 2022 in collaboration with the West Bengal
Wikimedians User Group, which will be helping in coordination and execution
of this project. A Wikimedian in Residence has been assigned at RIWATCH to
document, organize and upload the data and content of the rich collection
of the institute focusing on the oral traditions, language and culture of
different tribes in Arunachal Pradesh. The orientation and planning
meetings were conducted with RIWATCH members and a local tribal
organisation named Idu Mishmi Cultural & Literary Society to develop the
GLAM project. After the training of WiR, the GLAM work on Wikimedia Commons
has already been started. The details can be seen here - Commons category
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Research_Institute_of_World%27s…>
and GLAM project page <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:RIWATCH>
.
We welcome your suggestions.
Regards,
Subodh & Bodhisattwa

The Foundation offers this list of eligible expenses
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Learn> (e.g., you
can use this grant money to pay for direct expenses like supplies, but you
cannot use funds to pay for an event coordinator). You cannot pay
honorariums to speakers you have at your events but you can give material
gifts (gift cards, etc.).
-
Note that at this moment, in-person meetups of 10 people or fewer can be
held without extra approval; if your meetup will be larger please follow
the steps listed for Risk Assessment.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Risk_assessment_during_COVID-19>
Eligibility:

Proposals should support the achievement of Wikimedia’s mission
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mission> and be related to the
Hackathon (this cannot support edit-a-thon projects for example).
-
There are some countries to which the Foundation cannot disburse funds.
If you have been ineligible for WMF funds through other opportunities,
please email hlepp(a)wikimedia.org to verify your eligibility for this

be in effect throughout the event, on all platforms and at local meetups.
Please have a look at it and ensure you are willing and able to follow it.
How to Apply: Start your application
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Apply#Other> in the
yellow box marked “Other”. Enter the title of your proposal: Hackathon +
[Institution/Group/Individual Name] (e.g., Hackathon University of Ghana
Legon) and click “Start my application”. Submit the application. Any
questions can be sent to hlepp(a)wikimedia.org.
Cheers,
Your Wikimedia Hackathon Committee
One of the stated objectives for the board of the Wikimedia Foundation is
to have a more diverse representation, for it to be more inclusive. As an
abstract it is a really worthwhile objective, once chosen as one of the
more diverse board members of the Wikimedia Foundation however, it is easy
to find it is a poisoned chalice.
The problem is that there is now a huge carnival where board candidates are
trotted around explaining themselves, giving their points of view. In this
way expectations are raised that cannot be fulfilled. They cannot be
fulfilled for several reasons.
- the board activities are to consider proposals and points of view as
prepared by the Wikimedia organisation
- there is no room to introduce independent points of view for
consideration
- even when all community elected board members agree on a point of view
(unlikely), they are by design a minority
When people are later judged for their contributions on the board by our
communities, there is no defence when it is argued that nothing
materialised from initial good intentions. In addition, there is no
interest from the Wikimedia organisation to learn what drives candidate
board members to invest an inordinate amount of time to play a role on the
"governing" level they are to enable.
Diversity can be many things but it is tokenism when board members are only
to fulfil a predetermined role. It is tokenism when the tradition of
prevalence for English and Wikipedia is not even considered. It is tokenism
when the needs of communities we could serve are not considered only
because "it is not a community we have defined we serve" particularly as
there is no cost except for initial configuration.
I have brought these points forward earlier in private communications. They
are not reflected in the provided feedback.
Thanks,
GerardM
How do US, Geman/EU (for Wikidata) and other sanctions affect our
movement and its projects?
How is WMF supporting Wikimedians in Ukraine? And - where sanctions
allow - supporting Wikimedians in Russia, who are trying to
disseminate facts and fight censorship and propaganda?

We at Wiki Project Med are working to get Our World in Data (OWID) working
within a mediawiki environment.
1) We have created a mirror of their website on WMF servers
<https://owidm.wmcloud.org/grapher/interventions-ntds-sdgs>. Hopefully this
has allowed us to address security and privacy concerns.
2) We have created an extension
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OurWorldInDataMirror> that allows
the use of this content within a mediawiki install
3) We have made a bunch of changes to formatting, such as removing the
logo, to make it compliant with WP practice and style. You can see an
example on MDWiki in the infobox here
<https://mdwiki.org/wiki/Neglected_tropical_diseases>.
My question to the movement is are their communities interested in using
this technology? There are about 4,000 of these graphs
<https://owidm.wmcloud.org/charts>. We of course will also need to develop
a framework for translation.
Best
