Free Knowledge Africa (FKA) is delighted to announce a call for
Facilitators across the African continent to join us in facilitating the
project "Explore Africa" in their various local communities.
"Explore Africa" is a project aimed at promoting travel information and
tourism across Africa by improving existing and creating new articles about
cities, villages, geographical areas/regions, buildings, schools on the
English Wikivoyage.
Wikivoyage is a multi-lingual, free web-based travel guide for travel
destinations and travel topics that any one can edit. It is a sister
project to Wikipedia, and it has also been called the "Wikipedia of travel
guides".
There exists a huge gap about African destinations and contents on tourist
sites and cultural heritage on Wikivoyage is highly underrepresented. The
purpose of this project is to bridge the knowledge gap on travel
information within African countries on Wikivoyage.
Our major goal is to reduce the knowledge gap on travel information
available on the English Wikivoyage by creating new and improving existing
Wikivoyage articles on African travel, geographic information, sports,
cultural and tourist sites and to also raise awareness about Wikivoyage as
a reliable travel advisory in Africa.
Facilitators would help coordinate the contest in their local community as
this would play a huge role in bridging the gap on Wikivoyage. Interested
organizations, affiliates (user groups/chapters) and groups are welcome to
submit applications via this application form <https://bit.ly/3sCW9ge>.
Requirements
-
Can be an individual, organization, affiliate (usergroups/chapters) or a
group.
-

-
Must be in good standing with the grants system/affcom requirements at
the WMF.

Dear Wikimedians,
The AfroCine Project team will once again like to thank everyone who has contributed towards ensuring the success of this initiative over the past few years. Due to your valued efforts, we have been able to add over 10,000 quality articles to Wikipedia in over 20 different languages. Over 15 countries have also been directly impacted through this project.
The team will also like to inform you of the leadership changes that the Afrocine project has gone through over the past couple of months. After more than 4 years of leading this project since its inception, I will be stepping down as the Project lead. I want to use this opportunity to thank the project team and the wider community for the trust bestowed on me to steer the project over the years and the support I have received all the way.
I am handing over the baton to Ayo Odedere and Eben Calist Mlay, as the Project Co-leads. These two long standing members of the Wikimedia community have been very crucial in steering the direction of this project over the past years and I trust that they are able to move the project forward with new perspectives and innovation, while I continue to support the project in other ways. I also implore the community to support them in the same way I have been supported.
While there won’t be a major contest this year, the new team is organising a brief stint in this month of November, which would be shared accordingly soon and we look forward to your participation! If you need any information or have any query regarding this contest or the project, feel free to contact the team on: info(a)afrocineproject.org.
Thank you very much for your constant support in running this project with success.
With regards,
Sam Oyeyele
On behalf of the AfroCine Project team.
Hello all,
During the 2022 Wikimedia Summit in Berlin, the Movement Charter Drafting
Committee
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee>presented
the first outline of the *Movement Charter,* giving a glimpse on the
direction of its future work, and the Charter itself. The MCDC then
integrated the initial feedback collected during the Summit.
Before proceeding with writing the Charter, the MCDC wants to interact with
community members and gather feedback on the drafts of the three sections: Preamble,
Values & Principles, and Roles & Responsibilities (*intentions statement*).
These Movement Charter drafts will become available on the Meta page here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Content> on November 14,
2022. The community wide consultation period on the Charter will take place
from November 20 to December 18, 2022. More information on these
conversations will follow shortly.
*“Ask Me Anything about Movement Charter'' sessions*
With the goal of ensuring that people are well informed to fully
participate in the conversations and are empowered to contribute their
perspective on the Movement Charter, three “Ask Me Anything about Movement
Charter'' sessions have been scheduled in different time zones ahead of the
Charter consultations. Everyone in the Wikimedia Movement is invited to
attend these conversations. The aim is to learn about Movement Charter -
its goal, purpose, why it matters, and how it impacts your community. MCDC
members will attend these sessions to answer your questions and hear
community feedback.
The “Ask Me Anything” sessions accommodate communities from different time
zones. Only the presentation of the session is recorded and shared
afterwards, no recording of conversations. Below is the list of planned
events:
-
Asia/Pacific: November 4, 2022 at 09:00 UTC. Interpretation is available
in Chinese and Japanese.
-
Europe/MENA/Sub Saharan Africa: November 12, 2022 at 15:00 UTC. Interpretation
is available in Arabic, French and Russian.
-
Latin America/North America/ Western Europe: November 12, 2022 at 15:00
UTC. Interpretation is available in Spanish and Portuguese.
Learn more here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Community_Consultation#Ask…>;
Zoom links will be shared 48 hours ahead of the call.
*Call for Movement Charter Ambassadors*
Individuals or groups from all communities who wish to help include and
start conversations in their communities on the Movement Charter are
encouraged to become Movement Charter Ambassadors (MC Ambassadors). MC
Ambassadors will carry out their own activities and get financial support
for enabling conversations in their own languages. Regional facilitators
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Strategy_and_Governance/Team>
from the Movement Strategy and Governance team are available to support
applicants with MC Ambassadors grant requests. If you are interested please
sign up here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Strategy_and_Governance/Movement_C…>.
Should you have specific questions, please reach out to the MSG team via

Hi everyone,
On behalf of the Wikimania Steering Committee, the stewards of our movement’s biggest event, we are welcoming expressions of interest from community groups to host Wikimania in 2024 and beyond [1].
The last time we were able to convene in person was in Stockholm in 2019. After two years of virtual gatherings, we are excited to come together again in person in Singapore in August 2023 (exact dates to be confirmed very soon) [2]. We want to make sure there is plenty of overlap between the current organizing team and future ones. That is why we are now accepting expressions of interest for 2024, 2025 and beyond. We hope to announce the next host by April 2023.
Interested community groups do not need to have a polished proposal. This is an expression of interest that we will develop further together. We will be taking multiple factors into consideration, such as the cost and location of the venue, visa requirements, accessibility, health infrastructure, internet connectivity, and security. If a regional collaboration is interested in hosting Wikimania, we will consider multiple cities in your expression of interest. We love to take the Wikimania magic around the world with a lasting legacy of people and projects. As such, we will also consider the rotation of previous Wikimania host cities hoping to take Wikimania to new places or those we haven’t been to in a while.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or comments. Submissions are accepted until December 16, 2022. You can read more on Diff [3].
Best regards,
Iolanda on behalf of the Wikimania Steering Committee and Wikimedia Foundation team
