Hi
I would like to set another namespace default for Special:Newpages. I my
case i would set it to 'all'. Is it possible to do that without changing
mediawiki code?

Hi everyone,
Wikidata's 10th anniversary is coming in the following days and the social media accounts start to talk about it, mostly from institutional/official Wikimedia profiles. That's really good! As one of the responsibles of the microblogging handles of the Catalan Wikimedia projects, we are also thinking on a good coverage on Twitter for next weekend, to publicly explain its advantages, successes and uses to free knowledge.
I'd like to remind that we are a multilingual movement and that both Wikidata and also networks like Twitter are really active in other languages than English. For this reason, being #Wikidata10 the most neutral and easy hashtag, I do not really get why #WikidataBirthday was the final choice to communicate this milestone. This obviously masks outreach efforts from other languages without being contingent upon English-speaking contexts.
Similar cases have happened in the past. For example, #Wikipedia20 was huge on Twitter in January 2021 by @Wikipedia and @Wikimedia, but then the WMF comms team utterly ommited to consider the rest of birthdays of the first group of non-English versions along the year (luckily the good press did its work and covered well many of those languages when their 20 years arrived). Please, remember that it may seem a small detail, but these things -a simple hashtag without anglocentric vision- also make a difference on language perspective (especially after such a time, money and human-consuming Strategy 2030 that boasts about equity and diversity).
We'll certainly use #Wikidata10 and we encourage other languages to do the same.
Thank you for giving it a thought.
Best,
Xavier Dengra

Dear all,
The Wikimedia Foundation Board recently met in Berlin for our quarterly
Board meeting, before a majority of the trustees attended this year’s
Wikimedia Summit. This was our second in person Board meeting since the
pandemic, and we used the two days to review critical governance and
election decisions and kick off a conversation around strategic planning
aligned with the 2030 movement strategy goals. Several members of the
Movement Charter Drafting Committee (MCDC) joined us as we continue to work
together and share visibility of Board governance.
On Wednesday, three Board committees - the Governance Committee, Talent and
Culture Committee and the Community Affairs Committee (CAC) - met and
conducted regular business. Anass Sedrati and Manavpreet Kaur joined the
Community Affairs Committee meeting as representatives of the MCDC. They
provided valuable input (and fresh eyes!) on the ongoing work of the CAC.
The next day was our Board meeting, and we were joined by Risker and Daria
Cybulska from the MCDC. This was also our first opportunity to meet face to
face with Selena Deckelmann, the Foundation’s new Chief Product and
Technology Officer, and hear more about her first impressions from her
ongoing listening tour with staff and volunteers.
We spent the first half of the day discussing a few big questions around
the Foundation’s long term strategic goals and its key stakeholders. We
looked at models for the lifecycle of an organization and how that may be
relevant to a global movement. This discussion will help us shape our March
2023 Board meeting where we plan to begin developing a longer term
strategic plan for the Foundation that connects the Foundation’s annual
plan to the broader goals of the 2030 movement strategy and also addresses
ongoing external trends around access to information.
During the Board meeting, we also spent time discussing governance topics.
After a year of discussion and input, the Board voted to keep its size at
12 for the next two years [1]. You can read our rationale here [2]. Members
of the Board will be meeting with the Elections Committee in November where
we will debrief on the 2021 and 2022 Board elections, review the
committee’s charter, and begin working through what is required for a
successful 2024 Board election. We plan to keep you all informed along the
way.
The Board also approved an update to the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC)
to remove a footnote within the policy itself
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Universal_Code_of_Conduct&type…>,
specifically within section 3.1, which created equity issues within our
community and did not meet its intended purposes of supporting a safe and
inclusive environment [3]. As usual, we approved the minutes of the
previous Board meeting in June [4].
The majority of the Board stayed for the Summit and I would like to thank
the many people who came together to make the Summit happen. It had been
years since we were together in Berlin, and I appreciated the time I was
able to spend with Wikimedians.
Overall, we were impressed with how well the integration of live in-person
and virtual participation worked, especially with such a large event. It is
a model that hopefully can be replicated in the future as it is a great way
to reduce barriers to participation. It was great to reconnect with people
that we have not seen in almost three years. This allowed us to make sure
we are all on the same track regarding strategy - old and new. Thank you
for the candid conversations and open dialogue in the individual tracks.
P.S. And as a reminder – there is a "Conversation with the [Wikimedia
Foundation] Trustees" session hosted by the CAC in a few hours today, so
you can register for the event or send your question to askcac(a)wikimedia.org
[5]. The call will be recorded, and there will be a live YouTube stream

Dear all,
Our latest WIKIMOVE Episode on peer support in our movement has just
dropped! Check it out on our website
<https://www.wikimedia.de/wikimove-site/podcast/episode-5-peer-support/>
and feel free to react to it on our meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WIKIMOVE/Podcast> to continue the
conversation.
What’s in this episode?
We talk about new projects to connect the people of our movement for mutual
aid. Our movement is constantly growing and diversifying, all across the
globe. New people are joining and new communities are forming every day. As
volunteers and as staff of affiliates, they are having to acquire new
skills, figure out how to organize, form organizations, do outreach and
advocacy, and work with institutions and governments. For every skill or
piece of knowledge that a Wikimedian is looking for, there is probably
another Wikimedian who has figured it out or has the answer. But how do
they find each other?
Our guests are…
-
Rebecca O'Neill, Project Coordinator of Wikimedia Community Ireland
since 2017
-
Jessica Stephenson, Evaluation Program Officer with the Community
Resources at the Wikimedia Foundation since April 2021
We hope you enjoy it!
*NOTE: WIKIMOVE is now only available as audio podcast. You can still find
our shows on Youtube with english subtitles but without video. *
Best,

Dear all,
The Wikimedia Foundation has for many years published the presentation
decks from its quarterly "check-ins" – a kind of progress report of each
department – on Commons.[1]
Each check-in or "tuning session", as they have been called in recent
years, covers the relevant department's work during one quarter of the
Wikimedia Foundation's financial year, which begins on July 1 and ends on
June 30.
It's part of the transparent management of the Foundation and allows the
community and interested members of the public to track the Foundation's
progress.
In recent years, however, the time lag between the tuning sessions and
publication of the related presentation decks on Commons appears to have
become longer and longer.
In 2020, the slides for the quarter ending June 30 were published on July
13. In 2021, they were published in late September/early October.
This year, we are well into the second quarter of the 2022/2023 financial
year, and not a single fourth-quarter presentation deck appears to have
been uploaded to Commons. The fourth quarter is particular important of
course, as it shows end-of-year status. But the relevant Commons category
still only shows the first three quarters' presentation decks.[1] A search
for "tuning session pdf" on Commons finds no relevant matches either.
Nor, of course, do we have appear to have any presentation decks for the
first quarter of the 2022/2023 year, which ended two weeks ago.
Is there a particular reason for the delay, and/or are the tuning sessions
now made available elsewhere?
Best,
Andreas
