Hi everyone!
I'm very happy to announce that the Affiliations Committee has recognized
[1] the Wikimedians of Peru User Group [2] as a Wikimedia User Group. The
group aims to serve as a connection between the various Wikimedia projects
and the people of Peru, and to support the organization of local events as
the opportunity arises.
Please join me in congratulating the members of this new user group!
Regards,
Kirill Lokshin

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Status update about improvements to
Special:Blockwith partial blocks
Hello
all,
In 2019, Wikimedia Foundation Anti-Harassment Tools team is
continuing to
make improvements to Special:Block with the addition of the
ability to set
a Partial
block
While
no functionality will change for sitewide blocks, over the next few
months
Special:Block will change to allow for the ability to block a named
user
account or ip address from:
1.
Editing
one or more specific page(s)
2.
Editing all
pages within one or more namespace(s)
3.
Uploading files
4.
Emailing other
users
Changes are being made to the design of the user interface
for
Special:Block to enable admins to set partial blocks.
All
Wikimedia administrators are invited to try partial blocks on
testwiki.
Special:block on testwiki allows admins to block an account
from editing on
up to 10 pages.
Administrators on Wikimedia projects
are invited to test this new way of
doing blocks on testwiki. Admins can
reply off list to this email to
request access to test.
Tell us if
your Wikimedia project wiki is interested in being one of first
wikis to
enable partial block.
Special:Block with partial block enabled went live
on Italian Wikipedia
today (January 16.)
Our team is looking for more
Wikimedia wikis that want to use the first
version of partial
block.
The first version of partial blocks is simple with new
features to be added
in the coming months.
Please spread the word by
about these changes to Special:Block by
forwarding this emails to others who
might be interested in learning more
about partial blocks.
You can
reach our team on
Meta
or
by email to give us feedback about the changes to
Special:Block.

Hello, everyone,
The next Research Showcase, *Understanding participation in Wikipedia*,
will be live-streamed next Wednesday, January 16, at 11:30 AM PST/19:30
UTC. This presentation is about new editors.
YouTube stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc51jE_KNTc
As usual, you can join the conversation on IRC at #wikimedia-research. You
can also watch our past research showcases here:

This month's presentation:
*Understanding participation in Wikipedia: Studies on the relationship
between new editors’ motivations and activity*
By Martina Balestra, New York University
Peer production communities like Wikipedia often struggle to retain
contributors beyond their initial engagement. Theory suggests this may be
related to their levels of motivation, though prior studies either center
on contributors’ activity or use cross-sectional survey methods, and
overlook accompanied changes in motivation. In this talk, I will present a
series of studies aimed at filling this gap. We begin by looking at how
Wikipedia editors’ early motivations influence the activities that they
come to engage in, and how these motivations change over the first three
months of participation in Wikipedia. We then look at the relationship
between editing activity and intrinsic motivation specifically over time.
We find that new editors’ early motivations are predictive of their future
activity, but that these motivations tend to change with time. Moreover,
newcomers’ intrinsic motivation is reinforced by the amount of activity
they engage in over time: editors who had a high level of intrinsic
motivation entered a virtuous cycle where the more they edited the more
motivated they became, whereas those who initially had low intrinsic
motivation entered a vicious cycle. Our findings shed new light on the
importance of early experiences and reveal that the relationship between
motivation and activity is more complex than previously understood.

Dear Librarians and Library Lovers,
#1Lib1Ref begins Tuesday January 15th! Imagine a world in which every
librarian added 1 more reference to Wikipedia...
Check out the new campaign homepage at *http://1lib1ref.org*
<http://1lib1ref.org>. We’ve added new resources for both editing
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref…>
and organizing
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref…>
.
Our goal is to make this year’s campaign as inclusive and expansive as
possible. Stay in touch by using the campaign hashtag #1Lib1Ref on social
media. You can reach out to the organizers any time at
1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org.
Happy birthday Wikipedia, and Happy #1Lib1Ref!

Hi all,
This is one of these things that seems particularly hard to find, so I'd
like to pick your collective brains on this:
What are the various policies across our little universe on using the 'hide
version' functionality to hide historical versions of articles? I would
especially appreciate it if you could elaborate a bit on how it's used in
practice with regards to privacy violations (what is the threshold of
private information that would justify hiding versions) and copyright
violations (when do you actually hide the versions, rather than just remove
it from the current version and leave it in the history).
Are there any global policies on this? I think not, but always better to
double check :).
Best,
Lodewijk
Hi all,
In the Dutch Wikipedia we started in 2015 with awarding the best
contributors of that year with an award to celebrate the best among the
many welcome contributions. We (Taketa & Romaine) got inspired by the German
initiative <https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiEule> on the German
Wikipedia that started a year earlier to do the same and was a big success
The WikiOwls, WikiUilen in Dutch, are symbol for wisdom and free knowledge
of Wikipedia.
The Dutch Wikipedia is known for its hard criticism and we hope that these
awards, to celebrate the valuable contributions, help to balance out the
criticism, as well as that they give inspiration for future contributions.
The process of the WikiUilen on the Dutch Wikipedia is twofold: first any
active contributor on the Dutch Wikipedia can nominate in six categories
other users that they think are the most valuable contributors for the past
year. The six categories are best newcomer, best writer, best illustrator,
best editor, best collaborator and best project. We then make a list of the
nominees and publish it (without indicated who nominated) on Wikipedia.
Second any active contributor on the Dutch Wikipedia can vote secretly.
Traditionally the most valued contributors of the past year are awarded
with a small statue at the new year's event of the local chapter.
The new year's event is an interested event for many editors to come to as
result of a mix of things together. It is hosted at an institution (often
an museum, usually one we worked together with in the past year) where
there is an overview of what happened in the past year and what will happen
in the coming year, an award ceremony for the WikiOwls, a free visit and
guided tour through the institution, and concluded with a drink. This
formula of a combined activity works very well and is for many years a
great success.
Yesterday the new year's event took place in the Netherlands in Burgers' Zoo
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Burgers%27_Zoo> in Arnhem where the
participants had half a day to freely walk through the zoo (and take photos
to enrich Wikipedia of course). With the award ceremony I first gave an
introduction, followed by experienced editors we asked to hand out the
awards.
Today the results of the fully community driven voting (and preceeding
nomination) for the WikiOwls also has been published on the Dutch Wikipedia
(in Dutch) at: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiUilen/2018
The next edition of the WikiUilen will be organised again starting in
November 2019.
Greetings (also from my colleague Taketa),
Romaine

Hey Everyone!
I have a question. Within the movement, what are the best online showcases
of our content, movement and volunteers?
Context: We've been featuring the blog post about the Wiki Loves Monuments
winners in thank you email and banners to our readers and donors.
We want to showcase our best content to our readers and donors and are
looking for ideas about how we can do that.
Got examples? Ideas? More complex suggestions for next year or future years?

Dear all,
I have some difficult news to share.
A few months ago and completely out of the blue, an opportunity came up for me to exercise the full spectrum of my skills as the CEO of an early stage mission oriented startup. It has been a mighty struggle between my commitment to my team, the Foundation and the movement and this opportunity to bring all my skills to bear and build something from the ground up to do good in the world. I will not lie to you - it has not been easy. But ultimately I decided that I have to give it a go and I accepted the offer. I plan on starting there on Feb 4th so my last day at the Foundation will be Feb 1st.
These past two years have been amongst the most enjoyable in my professional career. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the movement and what fuels it and I’ve been incredibly privileged to work with a Tech team like no other. We have together strengthened the technical infrastructure of the movement and while much work remains to be done we have a much stronger team in place to take the mission to the next level. And I have personally made friendships that will last a lifetime.
The organization I will be moving to is Atlas AI, a public benefit corporation supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. I will be leading an exceptional team of AI and earth system science experts striving for improvements in human well being through data driven insights. Our focus areas are drawn from the UN’s sustainable development goals of no poverty and zero hunger with emphasis on Sub Saharan Africa.
I leave behind a Technology department that I am certain is well on the way to achieving our vision to create the infrastructure for the free knowledge movement. I am also pleased that during my tenure, we have built leaders who are equipped to take on this challenge.
Erika Bjune will be serving as interim CTO. Erika joined us a little over two years ago and she has distinguished herself as one of the finest people leaders I have ever worked with. Both she and Katherine will have my ongoing support — I will stay on in a consulting role to Erika on organizational matters and for the mid term planning work we have ahead of us in the remainder of the fiscal year. I know that I am leaving the Tech team in good hands until a permanent CTO is hired.
I want to close this difficult message with my heartfelt thanks to all of you for letting me be part of this incredible movement. Being a Wikimedian is a great privilege. I wanted you to know that I’m not walking away from something; I am walking towards something that is very important to me and the world. I will miss you all. Deeply. Truly. And a lot!
