Hello,
Many of you may have been receiving emails in the last 24 hours warning you
of "Multiple failed attempts to log in" with your account. I wanted to let
you know that the Wikimedia Foundation's Security team is aware of the
situation, and working with others in the organization on steps to decrease
the success of attacks like these.
The exact source is not yet known, but it is not originating from our
systems. That means it is an external effort to gain unauthorized access to
random accounts. These types of efforts are increasingly common for
websites of our reach. A vast majority of these attempts have been
unsuccessful, and we are reaching out personally to the small number of
accounts which we believe have been compromised.
While we are constantly looking at improvements to our security systems and
processes to offset the impact of malicious efforts such as these, the best
method of prevention continues to be the steps each of you take to
safeguard your accounts. Because of this, we have taken steps in the past
to support things like stronger password requirements,[1] and we continue
to encourage everyone to take some routine steps to maintain a secure
computer and account. That includes regularly changing your passwords,[2]
actively running antivirus software on your systems, and keeping your
system software up to date.
My team will continue to investigate this incident, and report back if we
notice any concerning changes. If you have any questions, please contact
the Support and Safety team (susa{{(a)}}wikimedia.org).

Hello everyone,
As I mentioned last month, we are making some tweaks to the monthly activities meeting to help better reflect the meeting's current purpose.
We will be discussing some of the changes at the next meeting. In short, we are working to make it easier for anyone in the community to sign up to give a presentation. We are also changing the name of the meeting from "Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting" to the "Wikimedia monthly activities meeting". This new name better reflect the meeting's scope beyond just the Wikimedia Foundation and reality that the metrics discussed during this meeting several years ago have long-ago moved to more frequently updated and accessible platforms (such as the online report card and related analytics reports).
The next Wikimedia monthly activities meeting will take place on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 6:00 PM UTC (11 AM PDT). The IRC channel is #wikimedia-office on https://webchat.freenode.net, and the meeting will be broadcast as a live YouTube stream.[1] We will post the video recording publicly after the meeting.
Meeting agenda:
* Welcome and introduction
* Movement update
* Update on mobile personas work with Logic Department
* Introducing the Wikimedia Product Principles
* Update on Wikimedia monthly activities meeting
* Questions and discussion
* Wikilove
Please review the meeting's Meta-Wiki page for further information about the meeting and how to participate:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_monthly_activities_meetings
We will be making some updates to the Meta-Wiki page in the coming weeks, and discussing those changes during the upcoming meeting.
The September 2018 monthly activities meeting will take place on Thursday, 27 September, starting at 18:00 UTC (11:00 Pacific Daylight Time).
Thank you,
-greg

Hello everyone,
If you are an editor of the French, Italian or English Wikipedia, and you
are interested in contributing to technologies for improving verifiability
of Wikipedia articles, please read on—we need your help!
In the context of the Knowledge integrity
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Integrity> program, we (the
WMF Research
team <http://research.wikimedia.org>) are studying ways to flag unsourced
statements needing a citation
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Identification_of_Unsourced_Statem…>
using machine learning, with the aim of identifying areas where adding high
quality citations is particularly urgent or important. Following the
success of the first labeling campaign
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Identification_of_Unsourced_Statem…>,
we now need to collect additional, high-quality labeled data regarding
why sentences
need citations.
You are invited to participate in a second annotation task
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Identification_of_Unsourced_Statem…>.
We used your input from the last experiment to generate a taxonomy of
reasons
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Identification_of_Unsourced_Statem…>
why editors add citations. With this taxonomy now embedded in the
interface, the annotation experience will be much faster and fun.
If you are interested in participating, please go to
http://labels.wmflabs.org/ui/enwiki/ (replace enwiki with itwki or frwiki
if you speak Italian or French), login, scroll down, and request one (or
more) workset from the campaign *'**Labeling Unsourced Statements II’*.
For each task in a workset, the tool will show you an unsourced sentence in
an article and ask you to annotate it. You can then label the sentence as
needing an inline citation or not, and specify a reason for your choice
from a drop-down menu. If you can't respond please select 'skip'. You can
also sign up by (optionally) adding your name on this page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Identification_of_Unsourced_Statem…>
to receive updates about future campaigns and results from this research
If you have any question/comment on this project, please let us know by
contacting miriam(a)wikimedia.org or leaving a message on the talk page of
the project
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research_talk:Identification_of_Unsourced_S…>.
Thank you for your time!

Hi all,
We have recently published our Annual Report 2017. If you would like
to learn more about examples of Wikimedia Deutschland's projects and
programs from last year, have a look:
https://2017.wikimedia.de/en
Thanks to the great response last year, our annual report is again
available as a visually appealing, responsive online version that also
works pretty well on mobile.
If you rather prefer to print it, you can do so as well: Our report is
available on Wikimedia Commons as a PDF version (3,96 MB):
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WMDE_Annual_Report_2017_en.pdf
Happy reading,
Cornelius
